Title: Cabin Floor Refinish
Post by: gfspencer on April 25, 2012, 05:52:12 PM
The cabin floor of my Com-Pac 23/3 looks really bad.  (Some DampRid spilled on it over the winter.)  Sanding is the only thing that is going to make it look better.  What would you seal it with?

I used a high gloss varnish (Flagship). It looked (and still looks) great but when we it gets a bit slippery. In retrospect, I'd used Epifanes flat or satin varnish. I used it on the rest of the iterior and it is a great sealer and looks good.
I'm sure the coating selection is a bit of personal preference. Others may be chiming in to offer thier opinions. I just happen to like varnish for it's hardness and long wear. I did my cabin floor 8 years ago and aside from some scratches from sand, it still looks good. It's ready for a recoat.

There was a product out specifically made for cabin soles in that it wouldn't get slippery when wet but I think it is no longer available.

One trick I saw (and may try when I refinish mine) is to make the lighter strips have a friction material in them to give better footing. I can't recall the exact procedure but I think you basically just put a couple of coats down and wait for them to dry. Then mask off all the dark strips on the sole. Put a coat down on the teak strips and shake friction material (sand) into the varnish while it is wet and wait for it to dry. When that dries put down another coat over the whole sole. It was either that or do the friction first but I think if you do it that way you may end up smoothing out the friction surface if you put down a number of coats.

I saw that also, Shawn.  It was called "A Teak and Sandy Sole" in Tropical Boating.

I removed my floor and replaced it with solid bamboo flooring.  I am very happy with the results.

I just bought a few feet of outdoor carpet from home depot. Sure it is not nearly as pretty as wood but it sure is cheap and easy!
maybe cost me $10. I think bought about 2 yards from a 4' wide roll. I had to trim it down a few inches on the side, but it tucks under the trim on the bunks and looks like carpet, not a rug. It's not slippery either. To cean all you gotta do is just take it out and shake, or vacume. It looks good, and you don't have to worry about scratches or refinishing. Going on about 3 years now and it looks as good as when I bought it. A P.O. Had removed the old flooring, for whatever reason, and the top of the keel was exposed. This just seamed like an easy, cheap, and good way to fix.

this is my solution - for the moment - for a need holly & teak sole - cleaning or replacement

i made a pattern of the floor - took patter to local carpet shop - bought carpet - then the shop cut and sewed binding

i have one more idea for the carpet i will share later - that is, if it works

if not, then my lips are sealed :)
