Title: Motor Mount Repair Proj
Post by: Spartan on April 17, 2012, 08:54:25 PM
I will need to eventually just make a new motor mount, but for now I'm trying a repair with thickend epoxy.
I'll be interested in seeing how this holds up versus pywood alone.

In Progress, with the decay filled with epoxy thickened with wood flour.  Once it sets it'll be sanded smooth and primed and painted with oil based red devil.
Seems once or every other year these plywood ones need to be replaced.  I've seen some molded plastic ones as well, but since I had the epoxy from a previous project thought I'd give it a go.

The epoxy isn't going to like the vibration unless you use some kind of reinforcement fiber.  Why not remove enough material to 5200 glue on a replacement piece of wood?

That's a good point TG.  I'll be using a 55Lbs thurst trolling motot so hopefully the vibration will be minimal.  I am curious to see if the epoxy coating helps the duration of the wood.

I repaired mine the same way you are doing it using WEST Epoxy and filler.

My epoxy repair held up fine for 10 years but eventually the rot got a new start in the inside of the board.

Then I made a new one from a solid piece of Iipe wood.

It took about 15 minutes to cut the desired length and drill the 4 mounting holes for the new mount.

Ipe wood is extremely dense hard wood that looks like teak.

There is nothing wrong with the epoxy repair. Mine held up fine but a new mounting board is very easy to make from any available hardwood.

Mine didnt look as bad as yours but the top was comeing apart . All I did was cut the top 2 inches off and sealed it .I really didnt notice any differance in using the kicker its just 2 inches deeper in the water .Good luck with your repair .
