Title: New set of SAILS for a Compac 16
Post by: TR on February 12, 2012, 08:21:18 PM
What I have is a as new set of sails from a Compac 16 I recently sold. They are made by Rolly Tasker Sails, National Sail Supply.
The Main is a Full Batton, Loose footed, 4oz Dacron.
Luff         15.25'     Leech      16.95'      Foot          8.00'
The Jib is also 4oz Dacron.
Luff         12.16'     Leech      11.83'      Foot          6.5'
I have only used the sails twice. Once on the Compac I had and once on the Montgomery 15 I just bought.
They are really a great set of sails, well cared for, in new condition. Unfortunately, they don't fit the Monty.
I'm asking $800.

TR,

I am making an  offer on a 1984 Com-pac 16 and it needs a new set of sails.  Do you still have these?  I also would need ot know shipping costs.  I live near Syracuse NY. The $800 is a little steep, but I might consider them anyway.

I felt the price might be a little high by the lack of replays. I'm not trying to ripe off anyone, so make me an offer.
As for shipping, I can check into that.

Hey MJ:
Recommend that you measure your present suit of sails and compare the measurements with those provided before you buy.
There seems to be a wide variance in standard jib sizes.  Look at the threads on sails on the C16 section of this blog.

Note that new sails will be smaller in all dimensions than aged sails due to stretch.

If you order based on measurements, take stretch into account.

Guessing here but 2" stretch for every 10' is probably normal..or close anyway.

Are these for CP16 or CP16/II?

+1 to you TR.

But.... I should have giving you a "tsk tsk" for trading your Com-Pac in for a Montgomery. Naw, those are nice boats too.

Billy

Both are nice boats. Any boat that size is a compromise. I have owned several small sail boats and have enjoyed them all.
The Com-pac has a larger cockpit, carries more weight, and has more initial stability. It also has great lines. I am in no way trashing the CP16.
The Montgomery has a larger cabin and IMHO it has a more usefull layout and storage space. The Monty will also point higher with the keel / centerboard setup.
The Com-pac is made in Florida and has a large east coast fallowing. It is hard to find here on the left coast.
I have been watching the Montgomery 15 for at least 20years. They have a strong fallowing and hold a good resale price in the west. I have been reluctant to pay the going price for a 15' boat. As I get older I am realizing that my window of opportunity is closing, so I might as well sail in the boat I have always wanted.

Did or does Montgomery make a 23 or is my memory incorrect? Small Craft Advisor magazine always seemed to do occasional articles on the Montys.

I like the Montgomery mostly because of the molded in lapstrate look of the hulls, so no tsk tsk required.
We have an orange 15 footer [?] here in town. Belongs to the preacher at the Methodist Church.

skip.

Good Day Gents!

Well TR's sails arrived today! All I can say is WOW! they are outstanding, full batten, loose footed main with 2 reefing points, stainless hanks on the jib, telltails, bags, data sheet, clean and crispy! My little CP-16 will be standing TALL this season!

Thanks so much TR, you've been truly great to work with.

So while I was waiting for the sails, I did a little research on the Monty 15 and 17's... Awesome boats, I can't think of a single reason knot to aspire to own one someday, they seem very well thought out, designed and manufactured, and have a huge following just about everywhere in the U.S. There's more to be found here:http://msog.org if interested...And while the lapstrake is cool, it's what down below and up above that really sets the Monty's apart.. More sail area and comfortable livin' for a small sailboat..

I hope I didn't offend any Com-Pac owners here, we're talking about the CP16/1 vs. the M15/17, both great boats, just separated by $.... Yes Bob 23, they make a great 23'...
