Title: sun cats with stainless center board trunks questions
Post by: bfelton on December 28, 2011, 12:53:08 PM
I have hull number 16 and want to leave her in San Francisco Bay.  Have any of you had problems with corrosion?   If so, is there any way to slow it down or prevent it?

Thank you in advance,

Bert Felton

Mine is an '02. I've owned it for 2 years. I see no problems with the centerboard or trunk. If your gonna leave it in the water, install new zinks.

Butch, how long of a time do you leave yours in the water?

Butch mostly leaves his on the trailer.

Mine is a 2006. The previous owner left it in the water for a few months at a time. The zincs were pretty well shot by the time I replaced them.

How fast a boat will eat zincs depends on a lot of factors and is very location-specific. Our boat was in an area known to have some stray current. The only way to know will be to observe how fast they deteriorate over time. If you can't get in the water, perhaps a little waterproof flashlight and camera on a pole could show you how it's doing.
