Craven county, NC claims that my 1983 Compac23 is valued at $5,500 for tax purposes. I am now prepared to sell the boat at a discount, say $5,000. Any takers? <VBG>
Aside from all the other fees associated with boating, you live in a State that taxes your boat too?
I'd move. skip.
I did just that! Left Raleigh earlier this year and don't ever plan to go back. (Who would want to leave this beautiful Gulf of Mexico anyway) Come on down, the wind is free!!!!
BobL
Skip,
My State (VA) taxes boats too. I pay about $24 per year personal prop tax on my CP-19. However, my real estate taxes on my $500,000 waterfront home are less than $1300, total. I'll take my $24 for your additional RE taxes any day. If I lived in overtaxed WI - I'd puke every time i made a house payment.
Delightedly under taxed, TG
Moved to Tellico Lake in TN from Kenosha, WI in Fall of 2005. Really enjoy the RE taxes as they are about 1/6th of the system in WI. No personal property taxes but sales tax at 9.5 % to compensate. I'm still far ahead! Regrets.............I was in love with lake Michigan out my front door. Sailing was terrific and there was never a time that I didn't give lake it's just respect! Getting caught out sailing in a quick passing storm and mounting waves on our thirty foot Tartan taught me humility.
Love my Com Pac 16. Dale
HA!
You're all just a bunch of low-tax babies! Try living in NJ where we pay super high property taxes, a pretty high sales tax and we have the most corrupt politicians in the nation. We grow 'em here as seedlings and distribute them to the other 49!
At least they don't tax my sailboat until I sell it. We do have a tax that I bet not too many states have: An exit tax. Goes like this: If I'm gonna move out of NJ, when I sell my house there is an additional tax I must pay. Now you know why I stay.
Tim: I just re-read your post: 1300 clams tax on a 500k house? I'd enjoy writing that check out. My house is worth, in this market, about 180k and I pay about 4400 clams. You know what they say: "New Jersey- Where the weak are killed and eaten."
Bob$$
Jeeeeeeeez, Bob! Now I know why so many people from NJ move to Smith Mountain Lake! One can hardly turn around without hearing "You Talk'in ta me?"
TG
Sorry Bob, but I think Illinois has you beat for corruption. 4 of our last 9 governors went to prison. When Blago turns himself in this February, we'll have 2 governors in prison at the same time.
If you look up corruption in the dictionary, it's spelled I L L I N O I S with a sub spelling of C H I C A G O.
As for real estate taxes, we're in the same boat.
carl
as we say in Mississippi "taxes?":)
Carl:
I stand corrected. The difference is that our governors are so currupt, they somehow circumvent prison...except for Mr. Corzine. He done got himself into a heap-of-dung!
Tim:
Smith Mountain Lake- here I come! Any good Jersey pizza down there?
Bob23...still proud to be NJ! Proud but broke. Not too smart.
I'm from Illinois and our govenors make our lincense plates. The recent one starts a prisom term of 14 years in Feb. and prior one is still is still in.
where are you at in il?
Curious. I thought I was offering a joke about the value of the boat. And the thread went off on taxes. For the record, yes NC counties tax boats. They also tax vehicles and real estate. The tax on the boat and cars is in addition to the fee for licenses. As for moving somewhere else, my world is not as portable as that of some people.
So, how about a comment concerning the value of the boat? Any comparisons?
Jcat:
You might try listing some more info about the boat. Motor? Trailer? Condition of sails? Otherwise you might just get a WAG from one of us.
bob23
Yeah. Motor or not? Trailer or not? Makes a big difference. A little over a year ago I bought my 23, about the same vintage for $5500. It came with a trailer (roadworthy) and a working 9.9 HP outboard. Also, condition would make a big difference. Mine is in very good condition.

Oh good. I see the old 'tax' post is gone. It's Tuesday and I was stopping by at the library to delete the post as I said I would.
skip.
Sorry...I never saw it.
Bob23
Said C23 isin middle condition though clean. It spent ten years on blocks. The sails are good in the sense they are clean and work though have some age on them. New running rigging, a 8 hp Honda with charger but no starter. No trailer (I wish I had one for hurricane season here in NC) New battery. Cushions in good shape though of a that earth tone color popular in 1981. It came with all the documents including the initial bill of sale. The bottom needs cleaning. I am quite happy with it but always looking for another boat and there is a Cape Cod cat at the sailing club for sale.
jcatkeson,
If you are selling this boat, you should post in the classified section of the board. Value of a boat is in the eyes of the beer holder.
TG
I wasn't attempting to sell it so much as responding to a question. At the moment, the boat is not on the market but if someone shows up at the pier and says he will give me X number of $$$$, it is gone.
