Title: NC Sailing
Post by: wes on August 31, 2011, 06:53:42 PM
Hi NC sailors - I live in Durham, just learned to sail in November, and have so far sailed only on Lake Jordan. I'm interested in any information about other good spots in NC, especially lakes since my Admiral is a little nervous about the wind and waves at the coast (come to think of it, she has always been wiser than I). Have been doing some web research on Lake Gaston and Lake Norman but haven't been able to talk with anyone who has experience sailing in those areas. We would really like to find a spot that has more reliable wind than Jordan, and decent ramp access without having to join a yacht club.

Hope to hear from any of you with lake suggestions to offer. Maybe by next summer I'll be asking about coastal sailing . . .

- Wes

Welcome Aboard Captain;
  Your best bet on NC info is ncsail.org.  I used to live in the Raleigh area and gained a lot of local info on that site.  Keep in tune to this site as well.  These are great resources.

Wes,

It's a hike for you but Fall sailing on Smith Mountain Lake  gives you the consistent winds and open waters, along with gunkholing that you may be looking for.  There are several ramps available for easy launching at the southern (big) end of the lake. Take a look at https://activecaptain.com.  The three best for that end of the lake are: Mitchell's point marina, Parkway Marina, and SML State Park. All less than $10 to launch.  Overnight parking included.

Come on up & we'll have a Blue Ridge 'Voo.
