Title: Homemade Lifeline Cushions
Post by: rdcvsmith on August 08, 2011, 10:32:41 PM
For those of you that have made your own lifeline cushions (Brackish & others!), what are you using for the inside foam/cushion material?

I'm browsing Home Depot online looking at some Polyethylene Self Seal Pipe Wrap Insulation (?)

2 3/4" Swim Noodle (?)

Go to Dollar Store and buy those kids pool noodles, take off the pelican hooks and slip the life line through the noodle.
You'll have to replace these noodles very couple of seasons, they'll fade in U.V.

What is even more important for looks is to put a collar with a set Allen key from Ace Hardwere around the vinyl coated safety cable and snuggle that collar up to the stern side of the last stanchion before the 'gate'. That way all those safety lines stay tight around the boat when the pelican hook is released.

Notice the Garhauher four gang INLINE block instead of the 4 gang side by side from the factory. No main sheet line twisting allowed.

She hangs on one fender. Solar panel on the fwd hatch. Electric electronics opposite side of compass. No influence. Wire to compas for red light at night is twisted tight with an electric drill and was held in vice till it started to knot up. Cancelling out the magnetic effect of an electric wire on the compass. Compass mounted on a ring so as to not intrude on the inside bulkhead.

These are the 'real' high dollar ones sold at West Marine.

I got pool noodles at the Dollar Tree.  Slightly smaller OD than other sources, 2-1/4" as I recall (I wanted that) and the ID is a snug fit on a 1/2" pvc pipe.  Come in four foot lengths so once it is on the pipe and cut to length, duct tape without compressing at the seam.  A buck for each noodle.
