I have a cp 16 from 1981. I am looking for a stopper (guess thats what its called). My problem is that my boom slides down the mast. What do you guys use to prevent that from happening?

Agree, my 19 has a Dwyer mast that accepts the Davis 2350 stop (the one with the cylindrical slider). A squirt of Sail-Kote makes it slide much more smoothly. But I would order it from defender.com ($7.99) instead of West Marine ($9.99). I find Defender to be 20%-40% cheaper than West Marine on almost every item. Makes a big difference on larger orders. They are in Connecticut and I get ground shipment from them in two days in NC. I will never buy from West Marine again. As far as I can tell they charge list price on every item.

If your mainsail is fitted with slugs (slides), then a sail stop normally is placed above the slot in the mast, once the main is raised, to catch the slugs and keep them from falling out when dropping the main. Also, if the mainsail tack is pinned correctly to the boom, then it's the sail that holds up the boom at the gooseneck when it is raised to its full height on the mast, right?
So, I'm not certain where your boom comes to rest in the mast groove when the main is fully raised. If its too low on the mast (well below the slot), then the luff of the main might be too long. Normally, my main, when raised, keeps the boom high enough (but below the mast slot), so that I can tension the boom downhaul to the cleat at the bottom of the mast to pull the boom down a bit and tighten the luff a bit.
If all else fails, the sail stop idea will certainly work, but if your main has slugs, then you might need two sailstops, one below the slot to catch the boom, and one above it, if desired, to keep the main from falling out of the mast groove when lowering. And in my experience, a sail stop has to be pretty tight to let the boom rest on it; otherwise, it'll just push it down the groove, especially if the boom drops on it.

Defender does have good prices and I order from them and West Marine. For small items it is nice to be able to walk into a store and get what is needed.
One big thing going in West Marine's favor is their No-Hassle Guarantee. On bigger items that can be nice to have, for example see the current mess over Rocna anchors and WM stepping up to offer refunds. If you purchase from WM online you can have them price match to Defender as well.

Yes, but it's an extra hassle twisting their arms to get them to do the price match, especially on an order for multiple items. Why don't they just start with competitive pricing in the first place? On top of the (much) lower pricing, I have had great service from Defender. Called them last week about some missing hardware in a shipment, and they had the manufacturer (Garelick) send me the missing parts within 24 hours. I am 45 minutes drive from the local West Marine store, so I do almost all my shopping on-line. I have tried them all, and I'm now a Defender guy all the way. Highly recommended.

I've also had incredible service from Defender. A while back, I ordered a Weem and Plath clock and when it showed up (next day) the mounting plate was missing. I gave 'em a call and the missing plate arrived in 2 days with no hassles whatsoever.
I'm sure that there are some items that WM carries that defender doesn't but that's life, right? I rarely order online from WM but there is a big WM store about 35 minutes away. The local store, which is about 15 minutes away rarely has what I need and carries hardly any sailboat hardware.
I'm sure they will both coexist just fine. But I'd love to visit Defender's warehouse sale sometime. They are only about 2 hours away!

I like this better than a sail stop. Stronger, doesn't slip and I kept losing sail stops when reefing. I have this to stop the sail slugs, and a sailstop underneath the boom under the slug removal slot. I don't like the sail stop because it slips. will probably do something similar to this for the underside, maybe semi permanent without the lanyard. This cost about four bucks at McMaster Carr. The pin is a spring ball detent type, so it doesn't pull out on its own. (sail is lifted up for the picture)

Off topic, hmm Defender vs WM. I like Defender for online ordering, WM OK for in store, but it depends on the store. Some are awful, some are helpful and will cheerfully match price. My favorite online store is Ultimate Passage, best delivered prices on big ticket items.
Same as a sail stop. One holds the boom up. The line down haul keeps the boom down. The other keeps the sail slugs from falling out.

I went to West Marine and bought the Round Slide Track Stop, 1/2" Dia. The round part fit in the grove of the Mast but the screw was to big. I guess Ill have to make something myself. Thanks for your help anyway
Just go buy a bolt and wing nut from lowes. Make sure it is stainless.
That's what I use and it works great, and half the price of west marine.

Had the exact same issue so I filed down the threads in the section that fits in the mast channel. Works fine.

one day while sailing i marked the mast where the boom stopped after raising the main and setting the downhaul. when i got home i took a piece of pvc (used to plumb the icemaker on my fridge) cut it to a length under the mark on the mast and shoved it down the slot to the mast foot. it cant get lost like a boom stop, wont corrode and didnt cost a thing. the boomstop i did have is now a sailstop as my new sail has slugs not a boltrope.
