I'm a little south of you in Narragansett Bay.

Shawn,
Thanks for mentioning that. There seem to be only a few CP sailors in the area. Perhaps not enough for a rondeevoo like Bob is planning for NJ, unless it was really small (like 3 or four boats maybe).
Any other sailors in the area, that would like to speak up? Bruce? Anyone interested in picking someplace to meet? Maybe July or August?
A few years back I mentioned getting CP sailors to meet at someplace like Nantucket, but that idea went nowhere. I'd be fine with Vineyardhaven, Cuttyhunk (very close for Buzzards Bay sailors), even Block Island (close for Narraganset sailors like yourself).

Central Connecticut coast for myself - finishing up the spring "to do" list, just picked up the new OB, hope to get it down to the slip this weekend or next. Looking forward to my first sail ever in the Coconut T.! After reading posts since i got her in November i would welcome a visit or meeting point in southern New England with any other Com-pac owners.

Hi:
I sail out of Swansea, Ma which is the upper Narragansett Bay area. I know of at least three other ComPac's in the area. One was for sale last year on the Sakonnett River in Rhode Island and the other one is a 23 I believe also on Narragansett Bay. There is also one in the inner harbor of Padanerum (a 27) which is Darthmouth, MA. I would be glad to me up with you or any ComPac member this summer, perhaps Cuttyhunk, Tashmoo or Martha's Vineyard, have boat will travel is my motto.

Curtis,
I have seen a few other Compacs in Narragansett Bay as well. A Suncat and a Legacy, both outside of the Wickford Harbor area. The Legacy I have only seen once but the Suncat I have seen several times.

Ray, Bruce, Shawn,
Thanks for the replies. Seems we have four CP sailors on this forum but within a 300 or so mile range. If we ever get together someone would have to go far. The center of gravity seems to be around Buzzards Bay or Narraganset Bay but Ray would have to go far. We can think about that later once we are all are in the water (or otherwise ready for the season).

Since this is my "rookie" year both in my CP19 & out in the sound, i don't plan on venturing to far away from home port .... yet! I would certainly drive up to RI for the day and meet up with you guys!
Ray,
Maybe we could do a short harbor to harbor hop along the Massachusetts South Coast.
The places that I know of along the RI coast closer to you are Watch Hill, Pt. Judith, Wickford, Newport. I'm not sure that any of these are good trailer launch sites. Maybe Wickford.
There may be some ramps with parking in Marion or Mattapoisett or elsewhere on the South Coast.
Any RI or South Coast sailors know of a good ramp with free or cheap partking for the tow vehicle? Is there a web site for ramps in MA or RI or CT?
Ray - you could also crew. That's a great way to get experience.
Curtis
Curtis,
Wickford has a free ramp with lots of free parking, it is where I launch from. I've launched without my tongue extension but it is better with one. On Google Earth check out: 41°34'40.87" N 71°27'09.09" W
It is sort of a two person job to launch from this ramp though as the dock isn't right up at the ramp. You can't push the boat off the trailer and directly walk it out on the dock. It helps if you have a person in the boat to motor over to the dock once you clear the trailer. If the wind is blowing the right direction you can put a long line on bow and walk it over to the dock that way, it is how I launched single handed with my Flying Scot.
I use to sail the Scot engineless from that launch site but you tend to either be beating the whole way in or the whole way out. For the most part that isn't too tricky (at least in the Scot which points better then the Com-Pacs) but it is very narrow at one point so you need to time a tack well and watch out for idiot 'sailboat' owners that are motoring in/out and not giving way. (grumble grumble...)
I keep my 23 in Wickford so if I'm around at the same time I could help someone launch if needed.
East Greenwich also has a free ramp but there is very little parking available.

Curtis,
This summer is all about learning for me. I absolutly would come over and "crew"!

Hi Scott:
Gee......I'm taking some CAD training over at Quanset Point which is very close to you in Wickford. I'll be training there until the second week in July. I could stop by and say hello some day after class if you will be at the marina (Brewers ?). Still doing the bottom on mine and should be in next week, I hope. As for any ComPac sailors in the areas you mentioned that might think it is to far to sail, come on down and sail on Allure for a get together with the other ComPac's that might be sailing in. Let's get some people together and have a Rendezvous!!!!

I'm not from the area but I may drive up to Cape Ann on July 23rd to check out the Blackburn Challenge. I don't plan to row it this year but maybe in 2012, God willing. If I do make it up, maybe I could meet up with a few of your fellow Compacers. If you don't value your reputation that much!
Bob23
Ray - Sounds like a plan. Now I have to get moving on the boat work.
Shawn - KIinda cool the way they do that. Free ramp, no parking for miles. Greenwich CT (not Greenwich RI) was part of a lawsuit in CT to open public land to non-residents with no parking or access to the town beaches. Other places do the same. One near us is free parking with inline parking for about 6 cars or maybe 3 boat trailers and no on street parking for miles. OK if you live nearby. The ramp I use is one hour parking with maybe a half dozen non-resident trailer parking spots so its to prep your boat before putting in, launch and get out.
Wickford sounds good. Sort of close to most people. Maybe a good launch point with a meeting point where there are moorings or good anchorage. Everyone has good ground tackle I hope.
Bruce - I think its Quonset Point (with an "o") in Warwick not to be confused with Quanset Pond (with an "a") down the street from me.
Bob - I googled Blackburn Challenge and found something about the Cape Ann Rowing Club, the Blackburn Challenge and the Essex River Race. None of this made sense to me until I noticed that the registration form gets sent to a HS in Glouster MA so it must be Cape Ann in Rockport MA. The data sounds good. Are you rowing or a spectator?
Good to hear from all of you.
Curtis
Curtis:
My tentative plan is to row the race in 2012 with the main goal just to finish! I'd like to check out the race this year. If I do come up, I'll pm you first. Are you somewhere on the route between NJ and Cape Ann?

Hi Bruce,
I'm not in the water yet but I'm at Wickford Landings not Brewers. That is the docks to the left (from the water) of the town dock. Would be fun to meet up sometime if I can manage it. I live about an hour away in MA.
Thanks,
Shawn
Curtis,
Wickford has I think 5 free moorings but they are first come first serve so I wouldn't count on them. I think Wickford yacht club has moorings for rent as well.
If you were to anchor inside the cove it would be well protected. I googled the harbor and came up with:
http://www.thecruisingsailor.com/index.php/moorings-docks-and-deals/7-wickford-harbor-wickford-rhode-island
Per that Allen harbor should also be a good anchorage but I haven't been there.
Shawn
Hi Shawn & Cutis:
Been into both harbors many times, Wickford is great and Allen's harbor is fair. Not much there (Allen's Harbor) but very reasonable and sheltered from the bay. I have never anchored at Allens harbor because they are so reasonable on their mooring and slips at the marina and yacht club in there. entrance into there is kind of an "S" curve but not bad. I like wickford because the town is great especially during the arts festival in the summer. I do believe Shawn that your in the marina that my friends sailboat is in, it's named NUEROSEA and is a 25 or 27 Paceship. I think it has a light blue hull. I do business with Wickford Machine in the Quonset hut there, he is an "old school machinist" an a real character, funny chap as they say. I'm not in the water yet but close. I'll keep in touch and perhaps we can put something together this season.

Hi, Gents. This is my first post. Bought a 81 CP16 a few weeks ago and I've been too busy working on her and reading good tips on here to do much else. She's in the water as of yesterday, rigged and appears to be floating! I'm in Groton, CT and lucky enough to have the boat in the water in my neighborhood. I'll be around most of the summer and would love to bring the boat for a get-together or meet you to crew. Wherever you decide is fine with me, but I'll be staying close to shore for the first year, so Cutty or MV I'd probably just meet you. Another thought--just past PJ there are a bunch of great ports (Stonington, Mystic, etc. so E.CT could be fun too!)
Really looking forward to meeting you all!

YEA!! - 2 CP owners here in the Nutmeg State now,
Got my neighbor pulling the Coconut T. out of the yard and down to its new home tomorrow (Brewer Pilots Point, Westbrook CT). - it should be in its slip later on this week. All new stuff for me - hope to be out on the water by mid-June, but taking it slow.
