Com-Pac 16/2/3/XL Specifications and Data Sheet

The Com-Pac 16/2 (also II or Mark II) was introduced in
1984 with hull #2202. The basic hull and deck remained the same.
Several modifications were introduced, including a new 7/8ths rig with
spreaders and a bowsprit. Later refinements were made to these models
including the addition of a centerboard, lifelines and interior
enhancements. Later models with all the trimmings were referred to as
"XL" models.

Hello CP-friends,

does anyone have more exact life-dates of the CP 16? From when until when were the versions (I, II, III, XL, CB) build and what were the standard specifications and equipment?

I am considering to buy a 16 or 19 and need more infos over here in europe about the boats so that i can understand and value the offers better.

And are there experiences about the CP 16 with Centerboard? Does it really optimize the bad windward angle and reduce the drift?

Hi Ludwig,
the main alteration in cp16's seems to be in 1984 when they added a bowsprit and raised the jib from a 3/4 to a 7/8 rig (position of the top halyard block).  Not all older boats will look like this, however.  Without knowing anything about this issue, I bought a 1981 cp16 (hull #1632), but it had the bowsprit and 7/8 jib rig.  Whoever did the work did a factory job and I never knew the difference until this summer via this website.  Ask for a photo, or a description, and you can find out if it has the bowsprit (~ 1 foot long).  This little addition has a huge impact on the balance and windward capabilities of this craft.  Also you will read in these forums that many swear by the foil rudder to improve windward performance.  The upwind ability of shoal draft Compacs is a topic of some controversy, but I side with those who find that the negative hype is over-rated, and those who sail cp's find ways to adjust and trim that make the sailing fine.  The adavantages of the heavy, but shallow keel are so much more worthy than what is, at best, always a slower and circuitous travel.

thanks for that! But all in all i have the impression the model history is not that documented as it should be for potential buyers, so i tried to put up a form sheet with the data i could find here on the website. But as you can see it is still a lot missing, so maybe owners or more informed guys can fill it up with what teny know. I have done the same for the CP 18, see the other section.

(I hope the form will display properly, no chance to add an attachment or include HTML-text?)

Thanks for doing that, it is a good idea. I think if we had a Registry of owners, we may be able to extrapolate that sort of information from the data we gather (this site is not an official presence of the Hutchins COmpany, so I don't have access to that sort of info).

I've looked at a few boat owner Registries here and there on the net, but haven't seen an easy solution to implement. I am keeping my eyes open, though, so maybe I will find something soon. I do like this idea of yours, it makes sense. :) Thanks!

I just enabled HTML in the post area, you could define a table and do it that way perhaps (I will test this below Note: It DID NOT work :( ). As far as a spreadsheet from a specific application, I don't know. The server and site are using all Open Source, W3C standards compliant applications (Apache on Linux, Perl, php, etc...), so if you know of a way to do that, full steam ahead! :) Otherwise, let's see if I can get a table to display...

Edit: OK, that didn't work too well. Actually, it didn't work at all. Let me do a little research, and I'll get back to you in this thread on how best to present this information. :)

I'm thinking that, enclosing the data with the "code" tag, the text may display on everyone's monitor in a monospaced font, retaining the right placement.  It required a bit of trial-and-error adjustment using the preview button (as the editor seems to use a kerned font), but this seems to work.  Now, I wonder if there is a less tedious way to add to the table, eh?

I bought a 1994 CP16 this summer (third owner.)  The boat is hull number 2834 and came with its original handbook that identifies it as a 16XL.  It has a bowsprit, lifelines, a keel (no board) and all the trimmings.  I'm delighted with the boat but still might add a folied rudder.

Hi everyone, I am the proud new owner of a Com-Pac 16/3 1991. Sorry I dont know the Hull # (or where to find it) this is my first sailboat and I have alot to learn! It needs some restoration, such as new carpeting, the electricity needs to be re-worked, new cushions, and the floor between the berths inside seems to be delaminating.. ( is that the term? )
and Id like to get  a bow pulpit and  life-lines.. It is sailable as is, I hope to get her into new condition gradually, learning as I go...I am so pleased to have discovered this forum!
