Well, nothing like a cold winter night to start planning the next RonDayVoo here in the south of NJ. So, with Pussers rum in hand, here I am.
First, what is a Tice's Shoals Rondayvoo? Well, despite what you may think, I do know how to spell rendezvous but choose instead to exercise my right to poetic license. A TSR is a very, very informal get together of Compacers and non Compacers alike at Tice's Shoals in Barnegat Bay to celebrate the fact that we can. Past dignitaries have included Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffet and Wolfgang Amadeus Motzart. PeterG and Dennis the Morgan 30 guy have attended also. Even I was there. This year, we are trying to get Ke3in to attend who'll be sailing his Seaward 24.
Second, when will this monumental convergence be held? Well, shoot folks, it's only February, how should I know? To narrow it down I'll say sometime this summer. Last summer, yours truly mistakenly planned it the same weekend as the "Rock the Bay" gathering in which the organizers try to round up as many yahoos as possible and cram them into a small amount of water. I'll not make that mistake again.
Third...well, there is no third yet but stay tuned. There are a few New Jersey Compacers here at the site so please feel free to inject your input here.
Fourth, what do we do? Swim in the ocean, eat, drink, admire each others boats while secretly thinking our is the prettiest, tell lies disguised as sailing stories and then hopefully watch a beautiful NJ sunset. Like this one:
Be there or be square! Or, like me- both!
Bob23
Bob,
Sounds great. If I can break free from the workaholics long enough (comes with the territory working in anything high tech), then I'll do my best to get there. Preferably by water though I'm not sure about the last few legs from Long Island or that I can get enough time for that. I'd want to do the outside route, not the East River, and the places to duck in along the outside of Long Island are few and they are shallow entrances.
At least the way back is down wind. Though both ways are upwind if using the trailer, the apparent wind that is.
Would anyone be sailing from Sandy Hook area to the Rondayvoo? Maybe from the Hudson River, perhaps?
Company would be nice but I doubt anyone else is stupid adventurous enough to consider the outside route from Long Island to Sandy Hook. Maybe.
Looking forward to the details. Plenty of time to plan.
Curtis
PS - You still buried in snow over there?
We got no snow from the last storm which delivered ice to points north and maybe to you. The one before that we only got 4" whereas even northern NJ got 20" Our snow is just about melted so that means I can't find an excuse to procrastinate on Koinonia's winter list any longer.
The trip from Barnegat Light to Block Island is a dream voyage of mine. Meaning I realize fully well that it may remain a dream.
The details of this raid will be forthcoming. Summer's a long way off.
Right now, I'd like to have the problem of too much work. Although the crew and I are not sitting home twiddling our thumbs watching Oprah. Yet. A good friend of mine hasn't worked in 2 months. I'd be broke and depressed. I am blessed to have a good customer base.
Bob23
No snow here. I'm in sunny California for a while. Went hiking on Sunday and it was 70 degrees. My wife is home but the Cape hasn't had much, but enough to be bothersome.
How come I'm the only one to respond so far to the rondayvoo notice? Northeast sailors hibernating?
Curtis
I dunno where all the NJ Compac-ers are hiding. Ron28 is probably still down in sunny, funny FLA. Last year, or was it the year before, Sherie was toying with sailing down from the Sandy Hook area. She keeps Blonde Ambition up in Atlantic Highlands. Do I hear a convoy?
As the details unfold about the mega-event, they'll be posted here at the site.
Bob23
Hmmmmm, possibility! I expect to be at Clearwater festival(www.clearwater.org) Croton Point with boat daddy's day weekend. Maybe Sandy hook would work for some of us as a rondayvoodoo to form a fleet the rest of the way.
Rip:
That would be cool. Sherie aka "Blonde Ambition" is in Atlantic Highlands...sounds like a plan!
Bob23
Sounds like fun... all depends on the timing.
Sherie
Would like to attend bad timing last few years. Short sail from Manahawkin.
Tom V:
Where in 'Hawkin are you? I'm in Ocean Acres but my boat resides in Surf City at the end of North 2nd Street in the summer.
I guess in the next month or so, we'll nail down some dates. Any preferences? Gee, if a lot of people show up, I may actually have to plan some activities besides eating, drinking, swimming and telling sailing lies . Not that there's anything wrong with those. We usually try to anchor more to the south away from the densest gathering of yahoos!
Bob23
(ps: I've made it to Tice's in as little as 2 3/4 hours)
Bob -
I'll try to make this years event. Medical problems made last year difficult. I'll be trailer sailing the Horizon off of my driveway (Freehold, NJ) this year. Exact location of event is not that important, as long as there are decent ramps in the area. I'll be heading up to NJ in about a month or so. Come down to Punta Gorda (Florida) earlier next year - that could get you a 17 knot ride on a trimaran in Charlotte Harbor.
Ron:
I guess the municipal ramp in Barnegat is the closest public one but I'm not all that familiar with boat ramps. I'm sure there are a few in the area that will accomodate you.
We wanted to be in Punta Gorda much earlier than 4/18 but cimcumstances beyond our control prevented us. I'd love to sail on your tri sometime.
The 'Voo will shape up in the coming weeks and/or months.
Bob23
Bob V
I am located in Beach Haven West area.
Gee whiz,man- we're neighbors! We gotta get out for a sail together sometime!
Bob23
Ok, ladies and gents:
I'm sitting here in the waning days of winter, pizza and chianti in my gullet and thinking about sailing. Spring is only a few days away so naturally my thoughts turn toward the 2011 Tice's Shoals 'Voo. I'm thinking the end of June or beginning of July- not 4th of July. Since we are planning so far ahead, anyone have any preferences? It seems like there are quite a few Compac-ers here in NJ that might be in attendance.
Stay tuned for more info as we draw nearer to this major event!
Bob23
hi Bob,
we will be sailing out of shore point marina - toms river.. i looked over the chart this morning, and it appears that the trip to tice's shoals is pretty straight forward.. it will be good to get the details, because i will have to work a few weekends in june and july, but i can have some say as to the schedule.. july would probably make the most sense as far as we are concerned.. i hope that we can make it work! jason
To narrow the dates down a little:
July 23-24 looks ok to me...how does that sit with the rest of you brave souls who might show up. I don't know if Jimmy Buffett will be there this year...we'll see! This could be the biggest TSRDV yet!

Bob,
Seems a bit early but that may be since the water stays cold longer up here. Will be busy July 24-29, Otherwise no firm plans yet this summer.
I hope to make it but can't promise to be there. Seems like if I do I will be one of the more northerly attendees.
Curtis
I'm now looking toward the last weekend in July- 29, 30 amd 31. More than likely I'd sail up on the afternoon of the 29th, meet up with anyone there and just wing it from there. Because this is so loosely organized ( to put it loosely), we are flexible. I don't know if Jimmy Buffett or Bruce will show up but I can't organized it around these guys- they have such busy schedules!
Any feedback?

Bob,
July 24-29 is bad for me. Have to be somewhere that week. (http://www.ietf.org/meeting/81/index.html) So far the rest of the summer is OK. Either way I hope Jimmy and Bruce make it.
Curtis
I hate to bow out of an adventure, but it just ain't gonna work for me. It looks like 10 days to 2 weeks to pull it off w/o any complications. With good winds ::) it would be a day down from, and a day back to New York harbor. Have to play the tides for 90 miles on the Hudson. Just don't have that kind of time available this year. I wish you all the best, rip
Rip:
That would be a long trip to attend such a unorganized event attended by a bunch of shanniganizing bay rats. I hope to post a thorough report here when, or if it materializes.
Curtis:
Wow! That sounds official. Come down some other time. End of summer and fall sailing are both great. Fall means N-NW winds and much fewer yahoos!

Well yes, that is exactly the kind of event I prefer though ;) rip
Ok...still trying to nail down a date for the 'Voo. Looks like more than a few pirates are busy around the end of July so how about August sometime? Full moon is Saturday August 13th and rises about 7:35 pm.
Kick this around, gents. Pedro G.- whadayasay? JT: Are you around or are you getting ready for school to start. What about any other of you bay rats?
Bob23
sorry, bob.. i missed this post.. this is a bit late in the month for me - I lead a trip to maine at the end of the summer, and i will be getting ready for that trip around this time.. i think that i will be down early in august.. a long with next weekend :) jt
Ok.
Iv'e consulted with the chairman of the North American division of the governing board of Compac RonDay Voos Global, and it looks like the official date of the 'Voo is August 6th which means we'll (or I'll) get there Friday afternoon, August 5th. I fully realize that I may be the only one there in which case it will be boring trying to figure out a way to drink all that beer.
Schedule conflict with Mr. James Buffet...he will not be there.
More details as we get closer to the beginning of August.
Bob23
Correction:
The chairman screwed up- The 'Voo will be August 12, 13. More details to follow/.
Bob23
How many voices are you hearing?
Mike
Too many!
Bob23
Update:
There will be at least one attendee at the famous and hard-to-get-iinto Tice's Shoals Rondayvoo: Me! Weather forecast couldn't be better...low temps, clear, and a full moon rising at about 7:30 pm on Saturday. Not much better than simutaneous sunset/ moonrise with a glass of Tequila close at hand.
Not sure if Jimmy, Bruce or Lin and Larry Pardey will be making appearances. You'll get a full report after the event. Cheers!
Bob23
Whilst perusing the local paper this morning with black coffee in hand, I suddenly understood why this years Tice's Shoals RonDayVoo will be sparsly attended: August 13th Tony Bennett will be appearing at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, NJ. Man, I'd love to go to that one. So I guess he will not be attending the 'Voo either...too bad...I really like him!
Bob23
We saw him at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday a couple of years ago- 4 days & nights of Jazz! He is truly a class act- a wonderful showman and still a tremendous singer- he had the huge crowd on their feet crying and cheering all at once- We will never forget that October night under the stars Matt
Well, the 2011 Tice's Shols 'Voo has come and gone. Jimmy didn't show up. Bruce Springsteen didn't make it either. I think everyone went to see Tony Bennett because, on Friday night, I was the only one there. But, I was due for some solitude time so I'll try to give a report anyway.
Had a great sail up. Took about 4 hours with the wind from the stern and starboard quarter depending on course.
I did get a chance to try out my new bimini which I named the Econo-bim. Yeah, I may not have much class, but I have some shade!
The first thing I did after setting the hook, was to open a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon which is the official beer of Koinonia. In bottles, if you please.
By the time I got there (5:30) sunset was in about 2 hours so I went for a row to explore the coastline. While this looks like it could be Maine, it's actually the bay coastline of the barrier island at Tic'e Shoals. Rugged, ayuh!
After thinking about dinner, I discovered that I'd left most of my food in the truck! At least I rembered the ice and beer. I'd brought some applea and I always keep crackers and peanut butter on board so I didn't starve. And I remembered this:
Jose Cuervo Reserva, which I brought back from Mexico a few years ago- the official Tequila of Koinonia. Together,we enjoyed one of the timeless sunsets of Tic'e Shoals. I'm not a big Tequila drinker, having abused this wonderful drink in the wasted days my mis-spent youth. But I've redisovered it and do enjoy it in moderation...maybe a wee bit more. Ole!!
Soon it began to get dark, as it usually does after dusk.I had purposely picked this weekend to be up here because of the full moon rising just before sunset. Hose and I continued to enjoy the slow passing of time...sun and moon do not conform to our busy schedules. Thank God!
Somewhere during this time, I got a call from PeterG who agreed to motor over on Saturday morning with bagels and coffee. Peter and his wife Becky and I met at the very first 'Voo 3 years ago and have beome friends, enjoying pizza's, drinks and each others company now and again. They sail aboard the Beagle 2, a Compac 27 which is for sale presently. I forgot my camera so no photos are available of the fine breakfast Becky whipped up- scones, muffins, bagles and some fresh fruit. And, fresh perked coffee! That is not a misprint: Fresh Perked!
Of course before they arrived, I made time for a pre-dawn swim in the mighty Atlantic and then sat back to enjoy a beautiful NJ sunrise. Jose did not join me for this one...I thik he had too much to drink the night before!
I won't bore yo uwith the details of the return sail home...about 4 hours of beating and then finally motorsailing. The new sails performed flawlessly and I completed the windward leg with half the tacks as last year with the old sails.
Well, there you have it. It was a wonderful weekend of solitude which, in moderation, I do love. Time seemed to slow down while I was there and isn't that something we all desire from time to time? It was a great time to get away. It seems rare these days to just have time to sit and think...and think..and think.

Awesome.
Excellent
Bob -
I moved the Horizon to Barnegat Bay today. I sort of got tired of the reservoir, but the main reason was I still can't raise the mast by myself, so I took a slip at Lighthouse Point Marina on Toms River for the rest of the season. The shoulder feels better, but I'm still missing most of the strength needed to raise heavy things over my head. The mast will stay up for the next 2 months and I can sail whenever I want to now. Should have done this a few weeks ago, and I would have made it to the Rondayvoo. Look for a red Horizon Cat sailing around.
The one good thing about the reservoir was that you don't have big power boats passing you at 20+ knots. They must be having some sort of a contest to see who can knock small sailboats around the most. One of then was about 10 feet away from me as he roared by making a huge wake. Last time I was on Barnegat I had the trimaran and I could keep up with some of them. That must have really pissed them off - being passed by a sailboat.
Ron:
It would be great to meet up at Tice's or somewhere. I plan to sail up that way some more this summer and fall. Maybe a Tice's Shoals 'Voo Two!
I know what you mean about the powerboaters but this summer I've encounted more that have slowed down for me. It's wierd...takes a bit of getting used to. A few summers ago, I was sailing north when a big Hinckey powerboat in dark blue approached my from the rear. As he began to pass, he slowed and the distiguished looking captain aboard, tipped his hat and said, "Nice sailboat". I returned the compliment. He obviously knew quaity boats- Hinckley's and Compac's.
Bob23
Bob -
You can almost tell who's going to blast by from a distance. If it looks like the cast of "Jersey Shore" on board (never saw the show though) you better hold on to something. You won't find them on a Hinkley.
Give me a week or two to figure out how far I can go on the bay. The marina's almost at the end of Toms River, about 4 1/2 nautical miles from the bay. Tice's Shoal must be another 6 miles down the bay. On a good day that would probably take well over 3 hours considering the east/west and north/south legs. I remember doing about 17 knots here 2 years ago on the tri. Won't happen this year. I've gotten the Horizon up to around 5 1/2 so far. Pretty good for a 20 foot cat boat.
Great report Bob. Ah, fresh perked coffee on the water. I bought an old fashion stove top perk pot for the boat and before an overnight go to the grocery store and course grind Community dark roast. The Admiral likes it so much I think she is going to throw out the auto drip pot and start using it at home.
Ron:
You must be by the marina where JThatcher keeps his 23. He is actually in Pine Beach or Beachwood, don't remember which. Maybe we can meet up closer to you. It takes me about 4 hours to reach Tice's. Depending on wind direction, I've made it 2 3/4 hrs.
I can proudly state here and now that I have not seen one episode of Jersey Shore. Nor do I plan to. At it's best, it misrepresents the true Jersey shore. At it's worse, I've seen cleaner stuff in baby's diapers.
Brack:
Some things are optional. Cold beer and fresh coffee are not. I carry a french press on board my boat but Peter and Becky carry a real live perculator. Either way, it's the real deal.
Bob23
Truth be told, Bob had a lot of solitude because he had the quarantine flag up and was blasting rap music- this is a man who really cherishes his curmudgeon ranking.
Rumor has it, though, that a lot more Compacters will attend VooTwo'11.............let's get organizing,Bob.
I work very hard to maintain my top rank curmudgeon rating...ain't easy.
Still plenty of Jose Reserva left. When are you and the Admiral Ann around? I promise to bring some kind of food this time although Frogmore stew is hard to beat! I make a killer Ramen Noodles!
Ron:
You can easily make Tice's on your Horizon Cat. 10 miles isn't that far...I've rowed farther. See you at the 'Voo Two!
Bob23
Bob, I have a French press at home, the best way to drink coffee!
I've thought about bringing it on the boat but I'm not sure how to heat the water. Or what to heat it in for that matter.
How do you do it? I have a charcoal grill but that would take an hour to get water to boil.
B:
I use the original equiptment Origo alchohol stove that came with my 23. It can heat enough water for the full french press in about 6 to 8 minutes. I use an old set of backpacker cookware that I keep on the boat.
Bob23
thanks. I forgot the 23s have the slide out stove.
Great story, Bob thanks for sharing!
hi Bob,
i finally got around to reading your report from the voo... wish we could have been there. of course, we would probably pass on the pabst and the other friend that you brought along... iced tea is our preferred beverage, and , when we want something strong, we let the tea bag in a little longer :) but, that aside, i am sure that the company would have been great - even if it was only you! and the pics were wonderful. so, one goal that we did not reach this summer was taking the boat out over night.. I am looking forward to that next summer, provided, of course, that the boat rides out the storm and survives! we will just have to see how things turn out..
a few years ago we had to evacuate our school early in our summer program due to potential flooding. I was part of the administrative team at the time, and the person in charge of the music program was trying to organize things so that students would have their instruments so they could continue to practice for the concert planned for the end of the week. I watched as the business manager grew impatient and then finally, remarked " we may not even have a building to perform in by the end of the week" i kind of feel that way about this weekend.. i am hoping to come down and get some items off the boat - the motor etc.. but, the reality is that, when all is said and done, i might not have a boat to put the motor on! guess we will just have to see... jt

Billy, here is a pic of our coffee essentials. Even though the Admiral doesn't drink the stuff (tea for her) I have to have my coffee in the morning. The cheapo butane stove sells for around $20 bucks on Amazon and it works amazingly well. It heats the coffee pot (we just remove the inside parts of the pot) in a jiffy even when there is a fair breeze going. The butane cylinders are available at any local Asian food market for about $1.75 each and they last a long time. I am still on the first can and we have used it several times. Add your coffee press and you are in business. We make about 3/4 of a pot full of hot water and it gives us coffee, tea and 2 servings of instant oatmeal for breakfast.

Thanks!
Are there ever any CP events in North Carolina's Jordan Lake, Tillery, Badin, or Lake Norman?
I hope to meet you (all) somewhere! I like a good cup of coffee AND tea also.
Although Puff does not have an "official" drink of any kind yet... Jose's cousin, Patron, might be it!
Oh! I have already had many morning cups of tea on her... in the driveway!
Thanks for all of your postings. I am learning every day!
I like the butane stove top! Nice size.
