New bowsprit added to spritless 1982- last photo does not have pulpit extended forward of forestay, yet.

I was rummaging around in old photo files- winter is getting to me- and thought I'd share these pics of a few of the modifications I made on Beagle I, a 1982 Compac 19.

looks good! do you notice that much of a difference by adding the bowsprit? Less weather helm?
Do you have a foiled rudder?

I ask b/c looking to reduce the weather helm on my 19.

Thanks,
Billy

Hi Billy,
I added the bowsprit to the '82 because it came without one, and the weather helm was not acceptable. The sprit I designed kicked the forestay out 24" from the original bow tang attachment, and the helm became almost neutral in low to medium wind, and exhibited a small amount of weather helm as the wind built. In high winds, I reefed and maintained proper helm feel. I sold the boat before I got around to making a foiled rudder. New sails also helped to tame the helm, but the greatest improvement was getting that forestay forward, not to mention providing a classier place to hang the anchor!

Don't worry Bob,
Koinonia sound asleep in her winter PJs and she isn't reading this board anytime soon. Trust me, her feelings won't get hurt!

Any Com-Pac in good shape is a good looking boat!
