At the risk of sounding like a novice sailor which i pretty much am.  could a boom vang be put on a legacy,  only 16 1/2 ft long and would it be of any benefit.

I read somewhere that an owner did so and "was glad I did". I'm in the process of buying a Legacy and have thought about adding one, but haven't had the opportunity to take her out and see if the boom-traveler/boom crutch structure (I forget what you call it) on the back will serve the purpose.

Put on a vang, for a small boat you can use it instead of a traveler. And off the wind you want one to keep the boom down anyway. Even on the racing dinghies we vang despite using a traveler for upwind, just to keep any twist out if we do let the main off. I used Ronstan 40's and 3/16 line on my 16. 3:1 purchase, same set up on the main except the main sheet is 1/4.

I Luv's my Gehighour [sp] Boom Vang ... use it all the time. Picked it up at the All Sail boat Show, Navy Pier, Chicago.

If I was to do it again I would have moved the smallest boom bail available from Ronstad further astern about 5 inches so I could reach the rope jam easer  ... no big deal. It works to shape the sail.

I had to cut away the last two rivet holes off the bail so the ends would not creep over the top of the boom for the 'business end' while the tac is simply a vertical cleat screwed to a drilled and threaded round bar that is slid into the sail's slot.

I used aluminum rivets to secure the bail 10 or so years ago. No problem. I think there is four rivets to a side in the boom holding the bail on.
