Title: Wacky Wierd Balanced Rig
Post by: spayment on April 10, 2005, 08:25:53 AM
Check out this crazy rig contraption on a CP 16!

I admire the inventiveness.  It may even work.  But it still seems like a lot of trouble to fix something that ain't broke.

enjoy!

An interesting concept.  The rotating spar is the latest in efficient sail plans. Can't say I'd put it on my 16. I see it is keel stepped and would require significant modification of the cabin roof. Since I dry sail stepping the mast would be a royal pain, especially when I wanted to overnight because it would require sealing the mast to prevent the inevitable rain water from soaking my sleeping bag!

Also, I wonder how you'd reef your main with that rig?

I saw this rig in a good book of all types of sail rigs, 100 Small Boat Rigs by Philip Bolger.
The author extolls the virtues (namely simplicity), but thinks its best use is as an auxiliary setup for a motor cruiser.
