Spent a few hours out on my CP-16 The Ayla Marie, it was the first time I've really been able to get out on her since I got her. Winds were out of the NNW at about 15kts
here are a few pics of me and my girl on her

looks like you guys had fun! Where are you located?
You got a mail sail & boom on that boat? looks kinda high.
Also, what is the board on the pullpit for? is it to support the mast?
i live on Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys, yeah there is a main and boom, its the stock boom but the main sail is small, i lose sail space but its better for me because i'm 6'10" tall.
That is just a piece of 2 by 4 tied across the bow rail for no particular reason. shes a CP-16 I she doesn't have the pulpit.
Steve:
We in the Northeast are happy for you...and jealous!
Best,
Bob23 in NJ
Thank you!
Steve,
Pictures look great! We live in Fort Lauderdale. Weather is a bit too cold for us. I guess we're spoiled and like it hot.
Just got the boat early in the year and needed to make some repairs to it. Took most of the summer and only took it sailing twice on Biscayne Bay before the weather "turned" LOL. Hoping for some unseasonably warm weekends. If not, then looking forward to the spring.
With our spanking new trailer we should be able to explore the Keys this summer. Might contact you for some advice on some good locations to sail down there.
Enjoy!
Robert
we should have some real nice weekends left, it is a little chilly for me also but as you can see we got our sweaters on lol. down here there are lots of places to explore, especially in the lower keys, lots of little islands :)
I live in Tampa Bay and REALLY want to bring my boat down to the keys. You are very lucky to have such a nice place to sail!
The bow rail is called the Bow Pullpit. I think you may be refering to the bowsprit, that wasn't added until they came out w/ the CPIIs. All samantics really.
And having the high boom seems like a good thing for you then!! Being 6'-10" is a good thing for a FL sailior. If you ever get into trouble, worse case, you can just get out and walk!
i always thought the pulpit was like a small bowsprit, thanks for the clear up, and i can almost walk home from everywhere i sail, i stay on the gulf side of the keys between Bahia Honda and the Contents Keys but mostly. Ayla Marie isnt my first sailer, but deffinatly is my favorite. My first sailer was a 17' dolphin cuddie-cabin i was given when i was 13 (cant believe its been 12 years lol) it was a swing keel boat, was FAST, but kinda hard to sail, hurricane Georges took her away from me :(, i got my CP-16 from a guy that sold his house and needed to get them off the property i actually have 2 of them, but one is in really bad shape (cracked hull and keel mashed cap, but all the rigging and mine had a good hull but missing everything but the mast, so it took me a long wile to get her going, now she sails like a dream but isn't a nice as it will be. it wont take much time but it will take $$.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy the boat!
Keep those pictures coming, us northern guys need something to get through the winter.
Wow, that boom is high!
let me see its gonna be what l high 20s low 30s next week here. can you say jealous. im green. welcome to the site. there isnt a better group of people on the planet.
ouch... sorry to hear that, you all really seem nice. gonna do some night sailing tonight. give you all a report come Monday.
kicknbug and I will be down to go sailing with you tomorrow. Pick us up at the airport??
We'll bring beer, and I promise it will be cold!
Mike:
I'm hiding in your suitcase! Since Steve is a new guy, let's talk about initiation. How 'bout we all show up as his place in the Keys for the weekend? All in favor say "Aye!"
Bob23
bring boats and tents im island hopping all weekend lol
Aye!!
Stephen, you're a lucky man to have the cruising grounds you do. Winter is just beginning and I'm already longing for warmer sailing weather. It's going to be a long wait. :(
Good luck to you and your ComPac.
mel
thank you :)
i was out in the garage today putting a tach in the 52 and i have to say my cp16 looks pretty forlorne sitting there covered in ford parts and tools. gonna be a long winter for sure.
got back need to find my cam cord will post pics soon
Stephen,
I recommend that you go to the registry section and register your boat so that we can all see one more CP 16 owner in the Florida Keys.
just did thanks
i went out today----it was cold----i came back in
I went out today also. Cold put float coat on, furlined cap and gloves, set auto pilot ( Cajun style) went below and put pot of water on for coffee, sat in companion way and enjoyed view of mountains and large flocks of geese and other water fowl. After 3 mile beam reach entered friends cove and picked up their hidden mooring while the motored out for visit. Then reversed route for ride home.
Oops sorry guys, that was not on my 16 but my hummmm 22. Oh well it was still fun.
Have to say, after a long hot windless summer this cooler weather in the south is welcome. I'm sure next summer all you guys in the north will be out sailing while I'm trying to find some place cool.
Meanwhile warm cozy fires and hot spice rum to you all.
i went out yesterday its was cold but we didn't care, me and the boss were wrapped up like Eskimos, were out for about two and a half hours before the rain drove us in (cold and windy, we can deal but the rain is a different story).
i was trying real hard to keep the boss dry when we were going, me on the other hand, got soaked, the only problem i had was that i couldn't get through this one channel that runs between porpoise key and mayo key, theres a half mile gap between the islands but the channel snakes through the flats there. all and all a good day :)
Yes, cold and dry =good, cold and wet=don't even think about it
it was a little warmer yesterday, winds out of the NNW at 8-15 kts, me and the admiral went out for a sail after i helped my buddy put the transmission in his truck. wasnt as cold as last time, we did a little exploring and i kinda ran aground... i guess... the keel never hit the bottom but there was enough sea weed to stop the boat lol, soooo i had to jump in the 60 deg water to get her going again (were i was "aground" at was 3' deep so i had a foot and a half below the keel) other than that it was a fun day, besides the whole "power boaters dont know who has the right of way" thing, almost got ran over twice well not really "almost" but if i hadn't shifted course they could have.
all and all it was a good sail, hoping to get out again today, got to get all the sailing done i can before the winds die out again. happy sails!!!
and some pics

I went out today, too. To carry in firewood! Here in NJ, sailing season is over although I plan to row the Alden Ocean Shell on New Years Day!
Hey, Stephen: Better get some sunblock on the noggin of yours!!! Hahahahahahaha!!!!!
Yes, you do have a mainsail, but what is it from?
Thanks for the photos...keep 'em coming. Us Northern sailors subsist on these till spring!
Best,
Bob23
i dont know what kind of boat its from, it came with the boat, i use a lot of block on the noggin, its about the worst place to get sun burned!!! hoping to get out again soon, it was blowing 30kts today so i couldnt head out. hopefully tomarrow
Man, I love those pictures.
Another storm headed our way. I'll be out ice fishing this weekend. Bluegill for dinner in December. That's a treat.
Neal
thanks good luck ice fishing, hope the storms don't bring that much colder weather with them
Steve:
Keep sending those warm weather photos. It's nice to know that someone is warm.
Currently, here at 39.75 degrees N lattitude and 74.260 W longitude it's 21.8 F. And I work outside; no inside work in sight for this winter. Sometimes for therapy, I'll turn on the electric heater and just sit down below in my 23, dream and listen to the:

im thinking ill have more this weekend, the weather has been to chilly down here for fun sailin'.
hopefully they have better radio stations were your at than were im at, they got rid of 3 out of the 5 stations we had on BPK so we have country, or classic rock, but they dont play good songs :(
No, Steve, we don't have alot of great stations right around me. If one goes North eventully one will get in NY stations- great variety and probably the greatest radio in the country. To the west we have Philly- another good source of broadcast radio.
We have the general offerings of country, classic rock, NPR comes in clear which carries one of my favorites- Car Talk! And we have a good classical station which is strong.
Bob23
my sister and the admiral love npr, ill listen to it, got a lot of info there, but im a classic rock kind of guy.
Yeah, me too. Back in the day before the term "classic rock" was coined, we had a great station from NY- WNEW. There was this late night DJ Allison Steele with the sexiest voice you ever heard. As a bunch of 18 year olds, she could have sold us a car without wheels with that voice. Back then, the Who, Cream, Moody Blues, Jimi, Mountain, etc, were the main plays on the radio. Now they are classic rock. I guess that term is good in that it distinguishes the real stuff from this c-rap stuff. Please, if anyones into rap, this is not a personal attack so don't go getting your Fruit of the Looms all up in a knot!
Bob23

I don't remember DJ Allison but do have fond memories of many days on the beaches of LBI listening to "Cousin Brucie" on 77 WABC...
LBI! That's where I and "Koinonia" hang out! And, yes, I remember Cousin Brucie and 77 WABC. And WMCA. When on the beach with the wife, I'll stull tune the transistor radio to 77. Or 1340am WMID oldies. Something about the sand, salt water and static of an AM station to transport one back to a simpler time.
Man, we are showing our age!
Bob23
Oh geez I forgot all about WMID! Yes we listened to both WMID and WABC back in the day. If something came on the one we were listening to that wasn't quite a favorite we would switch to the other and than back again. And I agree 1000% about the sound of AM radio especially the static as you moved around with the radio. Very nostalgic for me.
But of course I am also one that continues to use late 50's and early 60's vintage vacuum tube equipment for my stereo system that I have kept operational for many years playing vinyl LPs. There is a difference to my ear between the sound the old glow bugs produce compared to the solid state stuff and just like the static on the AM radio there are the pops a clicks on the vinyl that just seem to feel right... the only CDs I ever play on this system are the copies I make of the LPs so that they contain all the good "noises" not included by the original artists!
I agree, Rich, although I've made the jump to transistors in my music listening. My son, however, still uses a tube amp for his 1970 Strat. Nothing sounds better. Nice and raw, the way rock and roll is supposed to be.
And vinyl is the way to go. I still have a pretty good collection and you really can't beat the sound. Especially the minor scratches...talk about class!
Let's hear it for ampitude modulation!!

I will keep your son in mind then as I consider whether to sell my 1974 Fender Bassman 50 head to help fund some of the things I would like to do with my CP16 (there... now we are close to being on topic again?). I have only the head but restored it to near new condition and while I mostly used it with my big old floor speakers to mess (fumble?) around with an old Washburn Lyon bass I have occasionally loaned it to a buddy of mine that still plays his 197x Strat in a local band. The Strats sound great with the Bassman especially when cranked up to where there is just enough distortion...
Rich
Actually, I was gonna ask if you were interested in the Strat. He and his girlfriend and soon wife just bought a house in nearby Tuckerton built in the 1700's with an already restored interior. Of course, it still needs some work. He might need to liquidate some guitars and surfboards to pump into the house.
In an another return-to-the-thread attempt, he sails a 1977 Irwin FreeSpirit 21 which blows the doors off my 23. We also race his Sunfish against my Force 5. He beats me because he's using an aftermarket rudder and also because of his refuse-to-loose attitude.
Boy, we've covered some ground in this thread-drifting. From sailing to AM radio to guitars. CPYOA: The place to expand your mind!!!

got out yesterday, started out with winds at 10-12kts out of the NW. we sailed out to the east side of NO Name Key on a broad reach and then ran down the east side of the island using a whisker pole (whisker poles are awesome!) when we were about 2 mi out from the inlet to get to my dock, a squall came up out of no where so i decided to go to the lee side of no name, well that didn't exactly work, because i guess the last hurricane moved a sand bar into the small channel that was there. so that was a no go, and the storm passed so it didnt matter, then i started to try to tack back home, the wind and tide were heading the same direction so when i was tacking i wasn't making much head way. so i motored about a half a mile up the island after we were far enough up the channel we were able to tack back around no name and head home, i never realized how much of a pain it is to sail up wind and current. it was a fun day, a little chilly but fun, and the total distance i traveled was about 25 miles give or take a few.
Sounds great, Steve. Keep those stories coming. I froze my butt off at work today. Working on a bay front building. It is nice to see the bay that I sail in completely void of boats. Beautiful day.
My brother mentioned that tomorrow morning at 0317 hrs is a lunal eclipse. I might get up.
Glad you'r still sailing!

What's your home port? - anywhere near Tampa? Thinking of sneaking in a sail maybe Sunday if the weather holds . Matt
I went out today....it was a lubberly trip.
Could find no crew, all were either working or engaged in those pre Christmas activities that I think may be taking over the entire month of December. Weather was predicted to scare 50F with winds 8-10 from the SSE. Now for the lubberly part. Left the dock and usually detach and stow my three fenders, but decided to leave them hanging for "cleaning". I had left a reef in the main from the last time I used the boat, and was too lazy to shake it out although the wind was not high. I usually lift the motor when I get away from the dock and start to sail, but decided today to leave it down. Going up lake conditions called for me to put up the spinnaker but I decided, since I was single handling, I would just go wing and wing without a pole up the lake. On the downwind leg, I let the autopilot do all the steering while I enjoyed lunch and a lazy magnolia southern pecan ale.
Never got over four knots, most of the time between two and three but, it was a great trip and the best thing (or maybe the saddest) is that my lubberly condition was observed by no one. I had the entire lake to myself.
