Post by: Tim Gardner on November 07, 2010, 08:12:40 AM
Newt asked me to write a tutorial for posting photos in our messages here, so.....

Here is the link to the CPYOA photobucket account:

http://s1125.photobucket.com/albums/l594/CPYOA/ (http://s1125.photobucket.com/albums/l594/CPYOA/)

To create your own and to post:

Here goes....

!.  Open a new window and type www.photobucket.com in your browser's go to bar.

You will see a version of this:

2.  In the upper right hand corner you will see the login section.  Login as shown as CPYOA ( in caps).  Use the password "compac19" in lowercase as the password and it will take you to this screen:

3.  Click on "upload a photo", and your computer's local directory will be shown on your monitor. Select as many photos as is appropriate, and click on upload.

After your files upload, you will see this screen:

4>  Most of this is self explanatory, but here you place the image into the proper album, name the photo, add a description  and so on.

NOW. To post the image to your post, select an image from the album you have uploaded your picture to and you will see this screen:

5.  Copy the image code to your post and you've completed the photo posting to the message board.

Questions?

Works like a charm. You can even do it from your boat!

Yes it does work well. Be aware though that I uploaded what appeared to be the first pic after this was set up yesterday and referenced it in a post in the classified section. Later more pics were added by someone and organized into albums. This broke the img link for the pic I used in the post yesterday resulting in a large box from photobucket indicating that the pic had been deleted or moved. I had to go back into photobucket and get the new img link and modify the post in order for the pic to show again.

Also, it took a few minutes to figure out how to get the new img link. Hovering the mouse pointer over the pic in the initial screen after logging in was no longer producing the pop up that allows one to get the new img link. I ended up having to click "All Albums" and then going to the "com-pac 16 pics" album where the pic had been moved to. Once there the pop up to get the new img link worked as expected.

Hopefully this will save someone some ag while trying to use photobucket.

Thanks for setting this up Tim.

Rich is correct - If you move a pic after you post it, you will break the link, so take care to place your image in the album you want it to be in.

Hope to see Bob23 try it.  I'll buy the beer to toast his success.

I guess that I am just suffering from domestic blindness but would someone please point me to instructions on how to upload a little avatar pic.  Is there a file size limit or file type.  I tried to upload a very small jpg and the system didn't like it = " The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved. "
Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot upload directly to our board. you must store you avatar on a photo hosting site, and then use the first option to store your avatar.

The first post in this thread is a primer to using the photobucket site to accomplish this, but others exist out there.

Try again!

Regards, TG

If I wasn't so busy the rest of the year I'd fly out and buy a round. Maybe even work on a bottle of Glenfarclas.

A while back I did a tutorial on Sailfar for sheet to tiller steering. I use it all the time when soloing, rarely am I in the cockpit for steering, usually just for reading or other stuff....
The most fun is to pass others, when they look in the cockpit expecting to see someone else there:)

Sailfar huh?  I'm gonna have to go find that and read it, i'm really interested in that.

Should still be under "Sheet to tiller steering" in the Tips and Techniques section.

I hate to be the last guy on the planet to still not understand how to get pics posted on the CPYOA website...but somebody has to bring up the rear.  I have been trying for several days to get a pic show up as part of my profile.  I have successfully uploaded an image into the CPYOA Photobucket account...it shows up there with no problems...a head-on shot of WindRush and me...captioned "CP 23-3 WindRush".  But I have attempted to copy and paste the URL address from the CPYOA account into my profile data page numerous times and have no luck in getting the image to show up anywhere...on my profile page, posts, etc.  I know I'm doing something wrong but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is.  I'm also not sure how I could likewise incorporate other images that I would like to show up in replies to posts.  Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.

To get a picture to show next to you name, an avatar, In your profile, click on "I have my own image", then paste the http: code of your image from photo bucket.  Save and it should show.  The upload function does not work.

To post a picture in a post, open your picture in photo bucket. Once the pic is open, on the RIGHT side under Image Links, click on the code next to "Image Code".  That will copy the code, and it will say IMG with some brackets before and after the http: along with the rest of the link.
Then, you just use the paste function right in a post where you want the picture to show.

It will paste a long gyberish code starting with bracket IMG..yadda, yadda. Press enter to put some space between the picture and the next thing to type.

I can't actually show you what it should say, because it will just show the picture.

Give it a try, it's super easy once you know how.

Thanks for the help...it looks like the avatar image is finally showing up in my profile so I assume it will now be part of posts and replies.  I will give the second bit of help...how to post pics in replies...in a couple of days.  Keep your fingers crossed and thanks again.

I'm an old guy, and nothing should be this complicated when it comes to doing anything with photos.  I can't even enjoy seeing whatever photos might already be posted to the "gallery".  Fortunately I know what most of these boats look like, so I'll survive.  I am curious, most sites you can just go to "photos" and there they are, magic.  I attempted using photo bucket and finally gave up.  We have an iMac, so maybe this is the problem?  Like I said, I'm an old guy, I don't have any trouble typing, emailing or researching the net.  I can even email friends my photos!  But I realize I'm not in step with the times, I don't even have a cell phone....I don't need to be that connected....just my two cents...fair winds!

Mayrel,
Here are some directions I posted in a different thread for someone that was having difficulty.  I also use an iMac...so that is not your problem.  It works fine with an iMac.

Go to Photobucket and set up an account.
Click on Upload....you can upload from Computer, Facebook or URL.  My photos are on my computer.  Click "choose photos and videos"  Choose the file your photo is in, click the photo and it will download.  Once it is downloaded, the photo shows up on the lower part of the page.  Click on it.  Then you see the photo and to the right click in the box to the right next to IMG ("Copied" shows up in the box).  This will copy the link.  You can now go to CPYOA, start a reply, and paste the link (easiest way is to click "control v").  The photo should show up in your post and you are good to go.

The directions I posted were for a PC.  The only difference for an iMac is the last part when you paste the link.  Instead of "control v" click "command v" on the iMac.  It really is a pretty easy process using photobucket.  I had not used photobucket until a few months ago, and just kind of stumbled my way through it.  If you are an "old guy", you can always get grand kids to help you.  I was new to the iMac about a year ago and my 18 year old daughter was the expert that showed me the ropes.

...."I don't know how to post photos but next time I go out I plan to take some pictures.  If another member would be willing, I could e-mail them for posting." If you can e~mail pics, you can post 'em on CPYOA.

Nothing to it.
The pictures you want to show on CPYOA must come from a OFF LINE photo sharing site. There are many. I picked PHOTOBUCKET for my 1100+ pictures. First you must scan a picture from camera or printer and upload it to your Photobucket account. It's free to use this PHOTOBUCKET.

Each picture on Photobucket will display a pull down menu when the mouse's cursor is parked on the picture that you want to show on CPYOA.

Read the menu. Pull the cursor down to the DIRECT CODE found under the picture. Click on the DIRECT CODE, it will show the word 'COPIED' an the word will fade away. Not necessary, but as a precaution, I always go up on click on EDIT and COPY, just to be sure the DIRECT CODE was copied.

Minimize this window. Bring up the post that you want to put a picture into.
ABOVE every box or post that you typed a message into are two lines of icons.

Bottom Line, second from left going to the right you'll see a picture [it's to the right of what looks like a round red/blue pinwheel.] The icon you want kind of looks like a beach with a hill and some trees, blue sky. Click on that.

In your post you'll see something like this  [ img ]  [/ i m g ]  the space between the two [  ]  [  ]   is where you PASTE the DIRECT CODE that you copied.

It's actually pretty hard to place the blinking cursor 'tween the two box's if your old like me. If you don't get ALL of the DIRECT CODE into the right spot you'll only see a square box with a red X in it after you push post and go backand look~see at what the message to the group looks like.

Multiple pics can be posted by going back up to the 'Beach Icon' and selecting and coping and pasting another DIRECT CODE from the PHOTOBUCKET album .

Trumpin', I mean Skip...

I think you missed a key discussion this summer when you pulled up this topic from last year.  You no longer have to upload pictures first to a third party site. Changes were made to the site to allow direct uploading.

Just click on 'additional options' when pressing reply and you'll see how to attach a photo to your post right from your computer.  It's very easy and doesn't require an external site.  If the photo size is too large to upload, use a program called Irfanview to shrink them down.

Give it a try, it's pretty easy.

Well, there are two ways to put pictures to use on this site.  One way is to attach the picture just like you did above-by looking for the "additional options" under your reply,  which will place the photo at the end of your post.  Or if you want the picture in the post itself, for example for the reader to follow a story with several photos and text near the pictures, you'll have still use the old way of posting photos by using a third party hosting site.  It can be done, and it's really not hard if you do it once or twice.   Let me know if you need help, I can walk you through it on the phone.  It's way easier than you think.
