Title: 4 hp for my Legacy
Post by: Southwesternwinds on September 30, 2010, 08:04:45 PM
I final decided upon a 4 hp 2 stroke Mariner. I paid 300.oo  I use Amsoil Marine oil and my mix is 100:1   and she doesn't smoke. Yeah!  She weights approx.
45 lbs. as a long shaft and doesn't drag in the water when I'm sailing, and when tilted up there is plenty of clearance from rubrail.  I can push my boat along at
6 mph according to my handheld GPS.  The real bonus is it has Reverse!  I saved a lot of money not buying a new 4 stroke 4 hp and saved 15 lbs. of weight on the transom.

Sounds like a good choice. And at a good price too. I'm basically pretty lazy though and probably wouldn't want to mix the gas. Now if I only had that reverse gear....

I'm considering getting a gas motor for my Legacy so we won't be afraid to sail down the inter-coastal, which I'm hesitant to do with my electric. I've found a good price on a 2.5 4 cycle motor but an curious if that's big enough to push it along. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Sounds awesome. I recently had an Evinrude 4 hp 2-stroke, ran great. I only used the non-ethanol fuel the last 3 years after I found out it was what was ruining my fuel lines. You might want to do that too.

Used to have a place to get Amsoil, but quit finding it around. I remember using it on an old Nissan 5 hp 2-stroke I had in the 90s; 100:1, no smoke, great stuff.
