Would a Nissan 4 stroke 6 hp with 25 in long shaft at 59 lbs. be to much for the Legacy sailboat, sailing on the Great Lakes? Any suggestions out there? I wonder if the 25 in long shaft would drag in water while sailing?
I had the Merc 4hp long shaft on my 16 (made by Tohatsu like nissian) and i never had trouble clearing the water when the motor was raised. I know some have complained about the shaft or prop dragging.. Never understood why unless springs were weak and the motor was not raised as high as my mount raised mine..

Hey Doug, the Legacy has a cut downed transom with a fixed bracket to hold the outboard. Maybe that's why some say the outboard drags. 4 hp seems about right, except I wondered about the weight of a 4 stroke 4hp at approx. 60# on the transom. Long shaft probably the right way to go. Does your Merc. weight in at 60#?
