i read something interesting on the sailboat company website regarding converting a cp 19 mast to a mast tender system. it involved cutting the mast 20 inches from the bottom and installing the stainless hinge used on the eclipe. the spreader and inner stays were removed as well as the backstay. chainplates were moved aft creating a three point attachment of the standing rigging (like a 16). this rig, which is standard on the eclipe, would i think make rigging a snap. i wonder if anyone has done this and if so what the cost might be. knowing that im not getting any younger or less lazy, i need a rig that is as easy or close to as easy as a my cp16.
It should make rigging quicker and less fuss especially in that you can leave the mainsail bent on the boom. However you will still need to dismount the mast and move it forward for transport. The mast would be slightly less to step. You will still have the foresail to deal with.
The beauty of the Com Pac cats is that the gaff rig allows a short mast which fits within the boat length while still attached to the mast stub and is supported by the boom crutch. There is no foresail to bother with so it's nothing more than raise the mast - connect the forestay and go sailing. I owned a Picnic Cat for a while and sailed with someone on their Suncat, and for a day sailor or occasional over nighter (Suncat) hands down these boats can't be beat as trailer sailors. The Sun Cat is also much easier to get on and off the trailer at the ramp than a 19. Sailing close hauled the SunCat can probably stay with a 19 if sailed correctly, as is has the advantage of the centerboard.
If you are at sea in bad weather or for extended periods, the 19 is a better choice, especially if you have a place to leave her in the water. But for trailing the Cat boats are definitely the way to go.
Maybe you should be taking a look at a Sun Cat for your future.
