Ok, last weekend I had the the yard help me step the mast for the 1st time. (When I purchased the boat last fall it was on a cradle and the mast was on a rack in the yard...which worked out well as I didn't have to pay to have it taken down so that it could be trucked to my marina).
For me this marked a big step in the commissioning process. But like everything else there is always something that prevents it from being completely scratched of the to-do list. Small things....like one of the T-bolts on the split backstay that had a burr on the threads preventing me from getting it pinned to the chainplate and my tools on the workbench at home instead of in the car.
And oh yeah.... did you ever notice that are 2 possible locations to mount the forestay on the bow sprit?. Which one is correct & what is the 2nd hole for? I'm thinking that it should go in the forward hole and the second hole is for an extra head sail...possibly a genicker(sp)?
Any recommendations on tuning?
Any ideas on how to get rid of Murphy & his law?
Thanks...
I've used both holes, can't really tell a difference. Lately I'm using the rear one, thinking if I ever get a cruising spinnaker it would attach forward. The train of thought there is at the top of the mast the spinnaker/geniker attachs forward of the headstay. Although the forward hole makes for a larger triangle which is good for several reasons. The 150 I fly up there can use all the room it can get. This would be a good question for the factory, maybe I'll shoot them an e-mail.
As for Murphy, he is omnipresent.
I sent an e-mail to Gerry Hutchins, here is the reply:
Use the forward hole for the headstay. The other hole is there for "whatever". All the 27's, new or old, have the same setup.

Thanks,
I'm going up to the boat today to finish setting up the rigging, install the boom & lifelines. Thanks also for the info and suggestions from earlier this year. I've redone the bilge as suggested, (the plywood was soaked) rebedded the mast step, lifeline stantions, and one of the overhead hatches. The bilge was dry after a couple of good rains last time I looked, and the spot on the keel that was weeping has stopped so that now it can be repaired. The good thing about all of this is that I am becoming familiar with all the systems and the construction of the boat. Things are starting to look up....

Sir,
I have just purchased a 1986 27 . I too have the bilge problem . Wood under the forward part of the bilge is spongy. Did you rip out the bilge all the way aft also . Looks like a hard deal getting all the way back there. I was just gonna rip the forward part out and let it dry , then re fiberglass the whole bilge. Thoughts.....
Thanks JD
