Title: Capacity plate info
Post by: eheck on April 21, 2010, 03:01:50 PM
Hi,  I'm looking for the Capacity plate info for the ComPac 19  (1990).  Info indicated for: HorsePower, # of Persons, Total Weight Capacity and Persons Weight Capacity.   Thanks

As far as I know they don't put that info on sailboats.Speedboats have to have positive floatation when swamped so there is a maximum load they can carry and still float if swamped. Your 19 is going straght to the bottom if the cabin is flooded, and having 1 or 10 people aboard won't change the result.

In terms of the largest motor, well, once you hit hull speed you won't be able to go any faster no matter how many HP you have. You probably don't need any more than 6 or 8, but others are more qualified to make that judgement than I am.

Thanks...I'm not really looking for reality, I'm looking for this info because my state (People's Republic of Pennsylvania) require it on their Boat registration form...ugh...so before I made something up, I wanted to see if anyone's ComPac has a Capacity Plate with the requested info...Thanks

Ahoy,  why not try making a phone call to state and ask them what to do when sail boats do not have capacity plate.  May be you won't have to lie about it.

Good sailing

Hutchins should be able to provide a copy of the certificate of origin of your vessel to you with all of that info.

I tried that course but it was rough sailing.  The person I spoke with wouldn't move off of "That information is required".   Perhaps I'll call again and might get someone more helpful.  Thanks

Just got off the phone with another person at the state.  She said/confirmed that this info isn't needed for Sailboats and said the registration form has been updated to show that.  I now have the updated instructions.  Thanks all for your help.

AFAIK there is no legislated capacity limit for sailboats like there is for powerboats.

There is a rule of thumb based on LOA.  For a CP23 I think it comes out to about 12.  You'd be hard pressed to get 12 people on a CP23 and still be able to move about.  We've managed 4 adults and 4 kids.  With some in the cabin and/or sitting on the bow that is tight but OK.

"capacity limit for sailboats"? No such thing. Nor is flotation a requirement.

skip.
