Dave,
I'm not sure why they would have gone down to what I know many consider an appropriate selling price. The 2002 that sold a while back was an astonishing steal for the buyer. The boat information and pics seemed to suggest that the boat had been stored indoors and virtually unused - like brand new condition. The asking price as I remember was $8,900.00. Obviously it was snapped up in an instant as I recall by someone moving to California where the boat was located. I hope they at least paid the seller's asking price with dignity.
I purchased my 2002 a little over a year ago and received the original paperwork and docs. The selling price new with outboard was right at $30,000. So if Compacs hold their value - which I know they do - why are they being sold so cheap. The 19 is a sought after model no longer in production because as I understand it was too expensive to produce as a 19 foot boat. Since they are now in limited supply (very few on the market) why would the price be so low?
Of course a significant factor in resale is condition and age of sails and fitment. I have to chuckle when I see a 20 year old boat for sale with original sails "in good condition". A lack of upkeep and upgrades can really affect the resale price, as well as overall appearance. One thing I avoid like the plague is weird pointless owner upgrades like wheel steering on a 19, or the addition of a mizzen or staysail for a cutter rig. You did notice the odd changes to the rig of that boat. Kind of like the father was a 19 and the mother was a Compac catboat.
But as they say,"beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
