Title: hiding wires
Post by: Deb on February 25, 2009, 09:32:11 AM
I've rewired and added an inside light.  Moved the electric board, mounting it upward on the edge of the board in front of the chain locker area. Now I've got all the wires zip tied and want to hide them in the space between the upper and lower sections of the boat frame in the little space there.  Besides gorilla glueing them in spots any other suggestions to make them stay up in there?

I'm going to wire mine this spring or summer too.  I intend to use clear silicone.  I'll put the harness where I want it to live and duct tape it temporarily in place until the silicone dries, then remove the tape.  I'm thinking a dab of silicone every 8 to 10 inches will work.

Disclaimer:  I haven't done this yet so I'm not positive it will work, but I think it will.

My wire bundles are secured with wire clamps and fastened to the boat with short screws:

Try either of these:

If you have more money than sense, you can always go with the MacDaddy fastening system:

The wires on  mine were done wth white silicone, seems to work great.   The harness is strapped to the the mast support in the cabin.  I'm thinking a dab of silicone every 8 to 10 inches, was how it was done.

I like the silicone dab versus the screw and traditional wire clamp (as shown in pic. 2 of kchunk's post) simply because over time boats seem to grow screw holes.

Saying that, I can't believe I have advocated using silicone anywhere on a boat.

I know that many of the wires in my 16 are simply zipped together and tucked behind the carpet or whatever the stuff in the cabin is (the extra length of carpet is slid into the inner housing of the lower portion the the cabin). Of course the run from the light, if its in the middle of the cabin to the board up front, will need attachments, the factory used screws and plastic ties on my 2002 16.

I ended up using dabs of gorrilla glue and it's a great success.  Looks good!  Now on to making a screen hatch.  Always something to do till I can hit the water.  What fun!  Washed my jib in the washing machine today and the main out on a tarp...they sure are pretty.  Used Brasso on the jib hanks...nice.

On my boat the previous owner used pvc tubing about an inch in diameter along the joint of the deck and hull from the chain locker to just under the cockpit seats.  The pvc is held up by a couple of small pieces of wood that rest on that long, I guess teak, stripe of wood close to the joint.  It looks nice because you don't see any wires and really don't notice the pvc to much because it is white.

Here's another option:

I used wiremold, a plastic casing with a foam adhesive backing.
