Title: genoa
Post by: awamd on July 31, 2008, 10:51:10 AM
I am looking for a genoa for my Com-Pac 16.  Does anyone have one for sale.  Also, has anyone ever made a genoa from a kit.  Sailrite has a kit for a 16 that they claim you can make with a home sewing machine.  has anyone tried this?  If so how did it turn out?

You may want to try the classified section as there is someone there wo is selling all the parts off his CP-16.

RE:  Sailrite.  I have only read good things about them on this and other forums.

Here's a success story.  LINK (http://www.plasticclassicforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3125)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I build both a mainsail and genoa 150% from Sailrite. I purchased the ZigZag sewing machine because I wanted a heavy duty machine.

The sails turned out FABULOUS. It took me 5 hours of sewing for the genoa and about 7 hours for the mainsail.

The only warning is that for all the main stitching, a home machine is fine. There were a couple of "3 layers of fabric/patches and then 2 layers of Webbing" for the head which needs a heavier machine. If there is a Seamstress in town to help with the 10 minutes of heavy stuff, then you are in good shape.

I have only praise for Jeff's work at Sailrite. I would also purchase one of the CDs about building a mainsail. It is good listening and lots of good ideas on sailmaking.

The Zig Zag machine is worth every penny I spent on it. It paid for itself with the money I saved making the sail and it is now another skill set that I have.

If you have any questions, let me know..
