Title: Barlow winches...
Post by: JustStartin on May 07, 2008, 08:10:47 PM
Well, I finally made the maiden voyage with my CP-19.  Had a great time other than the fact that my wife was in the middle of using the starboard side winch and the drum popped off.  We recovered all of the parts except for one of the pawl springs.

Does anyone know where I can get a pawl spring for a Barlow 15 winch?  I believe these were the stock winches for the '83 CP-19.

Any info would be great!

Hi,

My 1984 Com-Pac 23/II had Barlow winches.  The top diameter is about 3 3/8" and the bottom is 3 13/16".   A local boat supply sold me some Harken springs (most likely #6 winch parts) that worked perfectly, and I suspect you can still buy them.  If you have real trouble obtaining the springs, I can send some to you.

Ernie, I appreciate your kind gesture...thank you!  I'll check the local marine supply stores for the Harken springs before taking you up on your offer.  Good day to you!

Wow how does a winch come apart? Must have lost the snap ring holding all together. skip.

Skip,

For whatever reason the drum wasn't properly locked onto the gear assembly and it popped off when my wife was trying to use it.  We were able to recover everything except for a pawl spring.  To make a long story short, the drum still wouldn't lock correctly so I'm replacing it with a Lewmar 6 winch.

Had this happen once on my old Catalina. I was complaining to my wife at the time that the winch seemed stiff. The drum popped into the air and took a nice swan dive over the side - gone forever!
My wife thought it was a deliberate move on my part just so I could order new winches! What a nasty thought!
