Title: Summer 08- Midwest sailing rendevous
Post by: Salty19 on December 31, 2007, 01:51:30 PM
To all in the midwest and others who may attend...

Roland Combine and I have begun discussions to organize a midwest sailing get together in the summer of 2008.  No plans have been made whatsoever as of now as we both would like to obtain input from folks who may plan to attend.  However, we have an idea floating that I would like to share.

First things first, we have no interest in making this a complicated ordeal. Ideally we as a group will agree on a venue, discuss and confirm dates, suggest accomodations (camping or hotel, hopefully with a group rate), help with maps/getting there, formalize the schedule (it will be loose, I promise you that!), and organize a dinner.  Roland and I can take care of most of the legwork  once we have an interest count and dates.

The intent of course is to focus on sailing and socializing while keeping it simple (ie no prizes, races, etc).  This is mainly to keep it loose and fun rather than keeping to a strict schedule, which sometimes spoils the fun with such events.  Before anyone asks...yes, I think it's OK for non-compac friends to come along.  There is no need to be snobbish about what sailboat can and cannot attend.

We are considering Carlyle Lake in western Illinois, about 50 miles east of St. Louis.  The reasons the lake is appealing are the relative central location, vast expanse of inland water ideal for sailing, and there is plenty of camping/picnic shelters and accomodations there. Nothing east of there comes close, except Lake Erie, which is a very difficult lake to sail.

http://www.carlylelake.com/

This I know is a bit far for some, me included coming from central Ohio. However, it appears to be a nice sailing lake and probably central enough to include a dozen or so states within a days' drive. There are also campgrounds with group accomodations, extending our group fun into the night.

So to get this started, I would like to ask a few questions to those who may attend...

1.) Who is interested in attending?  Rate your interest 1-10.  10 means you'll be there rain or shine, 5 means 50/50 chance, 1 means you want to go but the stars have to align to make it work.

2.) Is Lake Carlyle acceptable to you?   If not..let's hear your ideas.  Why and why not.

3.) Dates:  June 20-22 (Friday-Sun).  Frankly I pulled this out of my hat as a starting point. There don't appear to be any major events happening at the lake that weekend. Does this work for you? If not, give other dates between mid June and Mid Aug.

4.) Is 3 days of sailing appropriate?  More or less?

Please, if you would like to attend, Roland and I value your input to help make this event successful.

That should be enough for now to get started!

Happy Sailing.  Or in our case in the north right now..Happy shoveling :)

Put me down for a 5.

My summers are getting busier than I thought possible! And living in central Wisconsin puts me 3 hours from several huge bodies of water perfect for sailing. However if there is a good amount of interest and a group of Compacs is going to be at Carlyle, I'd sure try to be there.

YES,  I have already started working on plans to sail Carlyle lake this summer.  It be a bit of a drive but I think I can pull it off.  9.5 fer sure... June or August....  I would vote August... less chance of a rain out.
I checked mapquest and it would be a 6 hour drive.   Let's do get together!!!

Well, boys, I'm on the NJ coast...if I could make it I would but summer is a time for sailing, not driving! I'm gonna stick to salt water!

Lake-Keep an eye on things to see how it pans out. Would love to have you there.

Doug-

Point taken r.e. chances of rain.  June is usually nice, but August may indeed be better. I figured July is busy for most due to other vacations and such.
Any particular weekend in Aug look better than others?

Bob-Completely understand.  I wouldn't make that drive either.

By the way folks, Roland tells me you can boat camp here.  And he has a small fishin' boat to haul supplies the camp area if needed. Thanks, Roland!

to anyone interested in our rendevous-----since we are just in the planning stage i havent made any arrangements with the local lake authorities. if we have enough interested parties i should be able to get some kind of group rates. i dont have any expierence with the local motels. the newest one is by the west access marina about 12 miles from interstate 70. the west access has a large swimming beach but no docking facilities for visiting sailers. at eldon hazlett state park there are numerous camp sites most overlooking the lake. the cabins are fairly new and do have limited docking facilities. again i really dont know how far in advance they have to be reserved. some appear to be single family and some look larger with loft sleeping areas, but they are real nice. as to the camping on the boats. allens branch near there is a large no wake cove that should be able to accomodate everyone that wants to sleep on their boat. the large parking lot and new ramps should serve well. i put my boat in there and usually sail out from the dock. i thought a nice sailing day would be to sail north to the "big island" which has a long sandy strip on the north side to beach the boats and swim. they even sell hotdogs hamburgers and beer and soda there most weekends in the summer. it appears that doug and mike (and wives) will be able to make it. sure would be nice to have a big turnout. the lake is a pleasure to sail and with the cost of fuel motorboat traffic even on the weekends was light last year. during the week we would have it all to ourselves. as we get closer to spring i will look into the situation regarding accomodations. you'll forgive me for being ignorant about some things but i only live 25 minutes away from the lake and camping for us is the hampton inn. by next month i should have more particulars and ill post whatever information i obtain. thanks    steve bender   aka roland cobine   if you want to e mail me its rocobine1@yahoo.com

Come one come all .............this sounds like a great lake and we are leaning to August 8th, 9th, 10th weekend for it all to happen.  It would be good if all Mid-Westerners made it to this.  I will be there.  Along with wife, Linda.
Camping and cabins and beaches and good Com-pac company ........
Anyone want to design a window sticker or decal?
T-shirt?

Sounds like a lot of fun!  In response:

1.) Who is interested in attending?
I'm interested, but location is a little beyond my range in north-central MI.  I probably wouldn't make it.  Anybody planning to sail in L. Mich?

2.) Is Lake Carlyle acceptable to you?   If not..let's hear your ideas.  Why and why not.
Sounds like a lovely lake, just a bit far for me.  I am always in L.Mich.

3.) Dates:  June 20-22 (Friday-Sun).  Anytime from mid-May to mid-August

4.) Is 3 days of sailing appropriate?  More or less?  That would be perfect.

I'm not up to organizing anything this year, but maybe after I attend a get together I'll consider it.  Anybody on the east shore of L. Mich organizing something, I'll be there!

Jeff

You should start a new thread about the summer rendezvous on Lake Michigan!!! I know there are many of us that would love to sail out of Sturgeon Bay, WI and head to the east.

Good luck with the rendevous.  Its too far for me.  I don't really trailer my trailer sailor except for the few miles for the once a year launch and I can't sail there from here.  Sounds like a great idea.

The Dept. of Natural Resources cabins are full.

I'm booked at the Microtel at Mariners Villiage.  Rooms, suites, and cabins are available at good rates.

Boat trailer parking is allowed. It's VERY close to the lake and West Dam Access and Marina.

Hope more folks can make it. This should be FUN!!!!

Good work guys.
I helped organize the 2006 midwest rendevous and it was a great adventure.
I'll have to think about that long drive.  I live in Michigan around Ann Arbor and that's probably pushing a ten hour drive.
Its really hard to plan a rendevous that is close for everyone.
We made pretty long passages on our rendevous and that made us tired.  Elk Rapids to Northport was about 20 N Miles.  Then we returned the next day because weather was turning bad.
It was wonderful taking our boats out on that big water.
If a trip is planned nearer let me know.

Marcus-No doubt it's tough to choose the right location.  Being from just south of you in Columbus, it's a haul for me as well-granted only about 6 hours w/o stops which means 8 towing a boat.

If we as a group did just a wee bit of planning, we could host an event in different locations (ie Lake Mich in '09, Superior 2010, Pymatuning or Grand St. Marys 2011) so more could have a chance to get together with plenty of time to ponder their vacation schedule. I would have considered the event you planned last year, but frankly I had just taken possession of it.

I think Carlyle is going to be very nice! 3 definites and several maybes.

Doug made up T-shirts and invited Compac, I'm bringing the grog, Roland is a local and knows the police, so we'll practically own the place with such credentials!

I would be interested. I am on the St Croix, (Twin Cities). The distance wouldn't be too bad to go south. If the sailing is good, my Horizon Cat is easy to trailer. June date sounds good as well,
I would be about a "4"

Steve

We are now locked in on the August 8,, 9 and 10th , 2008  dates.  Hope you can make it.  I myself and my wife will be driving at least 6 hours to there.  Should be fun.

If you would like t - shirts and mugs are available at www. zazzle.com and then in the search type in com-pac.  many colors and styles avail.  good price too.

Some of us are staying at the motel 6 or  hotel 8 I forget. and there is another nice place right across from the marina that Salty16 is staying at part of the weekend.   We tried getting cabins on the lake with docks, but you have to reserve them like a year in advance..  missed the date.

Again, hope you make the trip.

See you there.   Any questions just ask.

St. Croix-

Hope you can make it down to Illinois in August!   I'm certainly looking forward to taking a few days off to sail and "hang" with the group.

By the way, we're all bringing our wives so feel free to do the same.

So a Horizon Cat?  Nice!

Please let us know as the date draws closer what you decide and we'll get you on the informal mailing list to shoot the bull.

I won't be able to make this but I suggest you start a new message thread with the dates that you've agreed on, a link the the lake carlyle web site, and a rendezous time and place.

You'll probably get more people if all that info is in the first message of a thread.  You could title it "Dates and times for Lake Carlyle rendezous".

Just a suggestion.
