Title: Is my boat a Com-Pac or did the seller misadvertise?
Post by: Timo on December 10, 2007, 10:02:55 PM
Hi,

I just trailered home a nice little boat that looks a lot like the current Suncat, except instead of an oval port hole it has two round holes on each side and the mast stepping mechanism is not as refined.   I'm looking at the title and the HIN is

COW003040182

Vessel manufacturer on the title is listed as "Suncat" not Com-Pac.

I'm not finding the manufacturer code as being active in 1982.

Can anybody help me with info on this?
Thanks,
Tim in Sarasota

Timo:

First, Welcome to the forum!!  Congrats on the new to you boat.  Can be the happiest day in a boat owners life.  Really exciting time.

AS for the ID of your "new" boat,  I am unfamiliar with the "COW" ID.  Yes, it looks as thought it was built in '82 and it looks as though it was the 30th in it's line.

However, I don't think Com-Pac was building Suncats at that time.  Think late '90's or so.  A photo of her would be very helpful.

Looking forward to figuring this one out.  Welcome again.

Paul

I recently saw an ad in a boating magazine (can't remember which one) for a Clark Mills SunCat. Maybe he manufactured these for a while. Clark Mills designed some Compacs, but I'm don't know which ones.

I recently saw a picture of one of the first Clark Mills designed Suncats.  It said he manufactured them himself for a while.  It did not look the same as today's Suncat but it certainly was related!  I would love to see a picture of your boat as well.

WOW.  :o
That would really be exciting if you had an original built by the designer!

Let us know what you figure out and post a pic.

Why not, I feel all sailors should be welcome, and if they don't own a Com-Pac now they will want to.    BILL

Humm COW...we can look that up. COW would be the manufacture. Like mine, HTC would be Hutchins Boat building, manufacture of Com-Pac Yachts. I'll have to dig a little. skip.

I just looked at the Manufacturers Identification Website : http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm
And when you enter the code "COW" it comes up as : JETPACE, INC. 10504 NE ST JOHNS RD VANCOUVER WA .

I have a suggestion. Forget about the title and look at the starboard side of the stern. The HIN is supposed to be permanently engraved just below the rub rail. Read that and let us know what it says. I  suspect that there might be a typo on the title.

FWIW, there should also be a matching serial number on the starboard bunk about half way down the length of it.

Actually the manufacturer identification code for ComPac (in serial number) is ABV.
