Title: CP 16 Cockpit Hatches
Post by: idouglas on July 04, 2007, 02:46:37 PM
My CP16/XL/III (sometimes known ad Bold Ruler - see recent picture uploads) needed to have the round cockpit hatches resealed as they were leaking when it rained.  When I took them out, I thought why not try and install access hatches so that the storage aft of the berths could be more accessible.  I ended up installing flush mount 7 inch by 11 inch rectangular hatches.  They work great and supply the necessary storage missing in the CP16.  Check out the pics on recent uploads or "owner's folders" under 1994 CP16/XL/III.

The hatches look fine and are functional. I finally get to see a picture of your boat, she looks great.

The hatches look really good.  Can you sit on them without them flexing???  I like to sit about where you have them located...

I have cp16 number 1994  year 1983...located in Burlington, WI

Looks great!!!

Doug:  There is no problem with the hatches flexing.  I have a cockpit cushion and I do not notice the hatches at all.

Doug and Les:  Thanks for the compliments.  I think the boat looks pretty great too.

Nice job!

Where might one purchase the flush mounted hatches?

I have had minor leak issues with my round hatches even after replacing them. This looks like a great idea! We don't sit that far back so weight on them is not an issue. Being able to stow the bumpers would be a great thing. Looks good too!

Beeman:

I picked up my hatches at my local marine store/boatyard.  West Marine has two versions of a similar size.  My guess is that your local marine store/boatyard can easily locate similar hatches for you too.  Just make sure you check the ID and OD template of the hatches inside and outside of the cockpit before you buy/install, and definitely before you cut!
