Title: Future CP Owner
Post by: SamG1965 on June 04, 2007, 07:59:05 AM
Hey there... My name is Sam from South Carolina. I've been considerring taking up sailing and been surfing the net for info. Beyond a friend's sailboard over twenty years ago, I have virtually no sailing experience. I've been reading about the CP's and coming to like them. I came across a 1978 CP-16 for under $1500 with motor trailer etc.... I haven't seen it yet, but from the photos looks pretty clean. Found this site and seeking advice. Is this an ideal boat for a first timer? Is this a good price? Easy to rig, sail, etc.... Will my S-10 Pickup pull it??? I do work with a couple guys who sail and will give me some hands on, but I would like to hear from CP owners as well. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum.  Also responded to you other post.:)

That's about the right price if in descent condition.  Good luck with your decision.  Yes, an S-10 will pull this boat.  Just make sure your ramp is deep enough.  Probably is if power boats consistently put in there.  And, yes, it's an ideal boat for first timers to sailing.

The Prairie School of Nautical Knowledge used a CP-16 many moons ago.  That's how I was introduced to this wonderful boat.

Hey again Paul... and thanks. I actually got an email back from the guy who said he would take $700. Sounds great, but then he added he never had it titled. I'm told that here in SC they will put me through hell proving ownership. Might cost me another $700 and six months before getting the thing registerred.

For what it's worth,  writing a bill of sale and signing in front of a notary public (with notary stamp) will certainly help the process along.  Same with trailer.  SC can take it from there.

Hope that helps.  Don't think SC will charge that much, but you never know.  ;)
