Title: Wiiinndddyyyy!
Post by: crazycarl on October 16, 2026, 04:50:18 PM
Been working on little projects getting the Orion ready for a cruise to Ocracoke Island next week. Now they are calling for 40-60mjp winds, coastal flooding and rain all week. Pleasant here today so thought I'd take the 19 out. Loaded a cooler, grabbed my camera and readied the boat. Motored out of the cove and as I was about to raise the main, a big gust hit us and spun her around. I sat for awhile and the wind kept rising. Letting out the jib just a bit and sailed back to the dock. Local wind meter is only reading 14mph, but it's funneling down the creek. Doesn't look like it will subside until next Friday.

Bummer that the wind ruined your trip!   It is great that you quickly turned around.
I have been trying to find a good weather window to get up to the islands on Lake Erie for 5 days or so before winter.  I haven't seen what I would call a good forecast, yet.  I'm starting to think I'm being to picky and I just need to do it!

Chris, glad to read you have your boat repaired and ready to sail. I've been planning my trips for next summer. With CLR the 2nd week of June, afterwards I would like to go right to the Apostle Islands for a week. Weather depending. It may be a bit cold up there, but we leave for an extended trip out west after July 4th.

I just went back and read that. That first post of Steve's should be deleted so not to confuse those of us with lower intelligence.

The last FULL week of June, or the last week?  June 21 - 26, or June 28 -July 2? If it's the latter, that may be a problem for us as Joan wants to be home for "Croaker Fest", July 2-4th. Afterwards we leave for Georgia, visit for 2 days, then travel to Arizona, visit for a week, then head north to the Grand Canyon for a day or two, up to Yellowstone for 3 days, and on to northern Montana for 2-3 weeks. Then we drive back to Illinois to see the kids for a week before heading home. So, in order to sail the Apostles, we would need to come up before CLR, and leave early so she can attend Croaker Fest in Oriental.

I see a "Misadventure" coming on.

Yes I saw your earlier CLR 2027 post where you were planning to go up to the Apostles afterwords.  Right now I'm in and my schedule is flexible.

We don't have a moon tide here. The Outer Banks prevent that, however we do  have a "wind tide". If the wind is out of the south, it pushes the water down the river sucking the creek water with it. Out of the north like today and it rises. At normal water levels the Compac sits with the coaming dock level. It's up considerably since this morning. All the ferries are shut down and the river is crazy. Our creek is very well protected and used quite often as a hurricane hole for boats. Friends were evacuated from Ocracoke yesterday and their vehicle was at the front of the ferry. The waves crashed over the deck and destroyed their windscreen.

Bummer!  I assume water damage to the interior as well?  Well TY for the photos and the update.  Actually what I referring to is your vacation plans for next summer.  I would need a vacation after that vacation.

😄 We've done it before. When we visit our daughter in Montana, we usually put 4-6,000 miles on the vehicle making a big loop visiting friends and relatives.
