Title: Night vision scopes
Post by: rwsandersii on June 13, 2026, 11:18:52 PM
Hello,
I'll apologize ahead of time if this is a duplicate topic.  I'm sailing on Lake Hartwell in SC, but I'm still thinking that a night vision scope of some type would be a safey enhancement.  Feel free to let me know thoughts on that, but I'm really having a difficult time deciding which configuration is best.
So far I've seen IR monoculars, binoculars with a 3" view screen, and a combination monocular with a flip out view screen.
I'm emphasizing more safety with equipping for my next season (which may be in 2027) because my wife has balance issues and we have 2 dogs that aren't yet familiar with the joys of boating.
Just as an aside (I will reintroduce myself in the general discussion soon), I've been away from the forum and even sailing for a while.  I don't think anyone would believe what has happened over the past 9 years because it sounds like a gofundme scam, but it's true.  Yet I'm determined to get the boat in the water as soon as possible.

When I purchased my Orion I found a Flir nightvision monocular in it. It takes stills and video. I'm guessing the p.o used it to look for exhaust from other boats. I don't keep it on the boat and never used it for that purpose.
