Arrived home after visiting our friends in the hospital to find a beautiful afternoon coming to a close. Temps in the mid 70s and a 10 mph southeast wind. The boats had lifted off the mud overnight so I jumped in the Compac, raised the main, and headed out of the cove. Once on the creek the winds felt a bit high so I only let out about 100% of the genny. I cruised down the creek before tacking and heading up. It took me a couple of tacks but I reached the bend and turned to starboard. I had never gone this far in the Compac. The Seidelmann, the dinghy, and kayaks yes, but the wind was never this good before. Sailing around the bend all the waterfront homes disappeared and I was left with the birds, the jumping mullets, and the setting sun. I let the sheets go and sat as the sky was set ablaze and the sky was dark. I live sailing in the dark. I made it back the mile and a half to our to our cove and hauled in the genny. The wind was dying so we glided up to the dock and gently bumped it. As I lowered the main, the winds felt began howling. Perfect timing. Joanie had put the outside lights on so I wouldn't misstep and fall in the water. Coming in just before 9pm she looked up and said, "I didn't expect you home so early". If we didn't have church in the morning, I may stayed out all night.
Wow, a perfect sail....how often does that happen? Good for you! I'm inspired to get up to the lake and get my boat ready to go. I've only got about six weeks left in my sailing season (don't bother when it gets hot, often windless and crowded with powerboats of all types), hope to do at least one overnight while the sleeping temps are still good.
This is a great time for overnighting on the boat here. Afternoon temps in the eighties, and sixties at night. No mosquitoes or biting flies yet. Perhaps later this week I'll over night on the boat.
