Title: Prep for this season - where is everyone?
Post by: passagesfromtheheart on March 22, 2026, 07:48:25 PM
Not much action here lately on where folks are with prepping for the upcoming sailing season -- so I'll start! I've got three boats to prep! Two of them are for sale -- my 2008 Legacy and my 2023 23 MK IV --  which you might have seen on the Classifieds. :-) (Shameless self-promotion, forgive me!)

I plan to do all of the usual prep work on the boats -  teak, brightwork, hull cleaning/waxing/buffing, etc, etc and of course to check everything over re: fittings/hardware, etc.

My 23 is scheduled to splash the last week of April with the marina; I plan to try to do a 'trial-run rig' on my new 2024 Legacy this week -- she has a furling headsail which I've not had on my other Legacies, so I'd like to get acquainted with that system.

How about you all?

I don't go on FB -- so tell us here what your plans are! :-)

Fair winds!

Seidelmann: cleaned the exterior, sails, running rigging, interior is yet to be cleaned. Bimini & sail cover cleaned and seams resewn.

PSC Orion: received a quote for new interior cushions, Bimini & dodger cleaned and seams resewn. Diving on her tomorrow to cut off dock line that rapped around shaft last December.

Compac 19: needs solar panel reinstalled, then ready to launch.

Sunfish: needs new tiller, dagger board needs attention.

GoBeDo is getting her bottom cleaned today as she sits in her slip year round.
She needs her bright work freshened and her porthole gaskets replaced.
Com-Pac 23.

I have now retired as a residential general contractor, so I should have more time to unfurl her sails.

That's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

You've been busy, Carl -- lots of boats makes lots of work...but lots of fun, too, right? I know the feeling having three myself. :-)

Are you still trying to find a captain for Sur La Mer?

I remember you mentioned possibly selling the Eclipse -- I'm sure a new captain will be found quickly! Best wishes on the sale! Have fun with the C-Dory 16!

Sounds awesome -- are you able to sail (mostly) year 'round on Carlyle Lake?

I dove, (dived for our British friends) on the Orion today. Surprised how warm the water is already. I was wearing a 3mm wetsuit, but no gloves or hood. Took me over 30 minutes to unwrap/cut away that dock line.

Congrats on your retirement and that's wonderful you'll have more time for sailing GoBeDo! What year is she, btw?

Eeks, I feel cold just reading your post -- glad you got that line removed AOK!

Haven't started yet.
My wife and I typically go away for a holiday in early-April for our wedding anniversary.
Sailboat and trailer prep begins after that, targeting a mid-May first launch.

Well, it was bound to happen sometime. What I have feared most of my adult life may have finally arrived and I'm worried. I'm not sure how to act on this predicament. Most of my friends have dealt with this, but somehow it has escaped me. Until now.

I'm talking about...growing up. Yeah, you read that right. I think I may be experiencing what most adults deal with every day. Being responsible and doing the right thing. See, 3 of my 4 boats are ready for the season, yet none have left their slips. I know, right? I have been working on the yard and even though I can see the Sur la Mer moving back and forth at the dock, I have somehow resisted the erge to drop the shovel and set out on the water. This is all new to me. I have always been the guy that "lives for today" and here I am actually wanting to finish a project instead playing and enjoying the myself.

I'm sick. I must be. Maybe I should see the doctor. Maybe even a shrink. I'll wait until Joanie returns. She never hesitates to tell me what to do.

As we end our time here in Florida, I have not done what I set out to do.  Nothing new for me.  A project that I did not do and as such will have to be done at home is the addition of a second battery.  My Horizon has one large battery and I just would feel better if there were two.  I have all the additional hardware I need and figured I would buy the battery here but then life got in the way.  I would go to the boat and sail, rather than work.  Other than that boat is ready for northern Illinois sailing.  I will pull her out of the salt water next week and give her a good bath, pull the anchor, add a few straps, tie up the sail and pull her home.
Other than the centerboard fiasco, it has been a good winter sailing season and I have the same slip next year so I am ready to head to fresh water.  Sail On - AL

That is about the time frame that we were looking to launch when we had our Com-Pac 25 up on Lake Superior. Speaking of which -- did you hear about the boats trapped in the ice out on Whitefish Bay? I heard the ice is 2-3 ft deep, still!

Roland, wondering if you know if that Sunday Cat for sale in Ypsilanti is the same one as before?

Al, safe travels to you back to northern IL! Where will you be sailing there, btw?

Hope to catch you at CLR -- really trying to make it work this year, here, on my end.

Hi, Chelle:
I had not heard of boats trapped in ice on Whitefish Bay.
How is it that they were out there as the ice formed?

Also, I'm not aware of a SunDayCat for sale in Ypsi.
I'll look to find a sales listing.

Regards, Roland

Ahoy, Roland!

I'm not quite 100% sure about the boats up in Whitefish Bay, but I think the story I had heard was that the smaller-sized icebreaker vessels which normally assist ships/freighters/etc up that way were having a tough go of keeping up with clearing routes. On top of that, the flagship (I guess you'd call it that) U.S. icebreaker is evidently out of commission which has complicated the situation as well.

Will PM you the Sunday Cat listing if it's still online. :-)

It's just a phase, crazycarl!

Or at least it should be. Being an adult is overrated, until that thing you were putting off comes back and you get pooped.

You have my respect, but not my envy.

Power washed the 19 again. Hopefully our pine pollen season is over. I mounted the outboard and...it started on the 1st pull! This must have something to do with the planets aligning last month. Tomorrow I'll mount the solar panel and launch her.

Question: I noticed water coming out of the o/b where the lower unit connects. Should there be a gasket there?

No pic because iPhone only saves to a img file and this site doesn't except it.

I tried to take a pic with my camera, but windows 11 wiped my file reducing software.
