Title: Off-kilter rudder - what to do?
Post by: athenas_owl on February 09, 2026, 12:46:08 PM
I have a new-to-me 1999 Com-Pac 25. Its rudder is about 15 degrees out of true with the tiller. A mechanically-inclined friend and I hope to dig into the workings later today. We have a small-sized Sea Scout youth (I'm an adult Sea Scout volunteer and am sharing my learn-to-sail journey with the youth, aided by knowledgeable folks, like the friend mentioned above) who will climb into the bowels of the boat to see if anything is obviously cracked with the housing. Then, we assume we'll need to get into the workings from above, but have no idea what we will or should find there. Any cautions or suggestions would be most appreciated!

Well, that was a pleasantly non-traumatic fix. We removed the tiller and it was easy to see how the tiller to rudder head bolts had been tightened when the tiller was out of line. May all my Com-Pac fixes be so easy! (I know that's too much to ask, but I'm grateful that today had an easy win).

Glad to hear the fix was easy. Also good not to hear you finding something else while fixing it as that usually happens.
