Title: Boot stripe
Post by: Cruzin on December 20, 2025, 07:07:57 PM
I want to redo my boot stripe on my Compac 19. Do I need to completely sand away the old brown stripe or just scuff it up really well? Also what paint is recommended. Thanks so much!

My boat had no boot stripe when I purchased her, but did have a brown cove stripe. I added black vinyl boot stripe tape and painted the cove stripe white. Since the boot stripe isn't under water, I could have used topside paint, but went with the vinyl since it was easier. The cove stripe was sanded with 80 grit then a thick coat of Total Boat primer was rolled on. After drying, it was wet sanded with 120 grit. Then three coats of Total Boat Wet Edge was rolled on. I let it dry thoroughly and wet sanded with 400 then 600 grit sponges. I made sure there was enough paint so that it could be fairly aggressively sanded. The final step was to buff it using a cutting compound before polishing the entire topside. It took a bit of time, but the result was good and both the boot and cove stripe still look good several years later.

You can sand and paint over the brown stripe. If you are changing the color a coat of primer will help. You can use petit easy poxy or Brightside. Epiphanes is also a great paint. I am sure there is a total boat equivalent.
