Has anyone tried to replace the long, teak strips on either side of the cabin top? if so, has anyone attempted to do so without the stainless screws that hold it in place being exposed rather than hidden with bungs or fastened from the inside?
I replaced the eyebrows on my 27 in 2023. I made new ones from teak lumber with the help of Wes Newman. We used 4200 and screwed them in place, covered with bungs. Not sure how you could do it otherwise. Lots of curves in play.
I installed new eyebrows 3 weeks ago on my 19. I installed them the same way the originals were. Screwed on with bungs covering the screws.
Are the eyebrows the same thickness as those on the Eclipse? Is so, how deep did you countersink the screws?
The originals were about 1/2" thick by 3/4" wide. The new eyebrows purchased from Compac years ago are 3/4"x3/4".
I countersunk the screws about 3/8". That left enough stock to secure them while being deep enough for the bungs to hold.
The bungs should be friction fitted, NOT glued in.
And therein lies the problem.
The stock eyebrows that were purchased from Com-Pac were 1/4" thick and 5/8" wide. Not enough to use bungs and that is why they are simply screwed in with #6 SS flatheads. I installed one today and learned that anyone who says it was a cakewalk--for one person--is far more skilled than I. One key thing I would offer to anyone doing this job is to secure the forward end of the eyebrow first. That is where the biggest curve is located and it will be much easier to proceed aft towards where the flatter surface is.
For those of you who have replaced them, were the originals also glued on with any kind of devilish concoction such as 5200? I seem to remember someone (Bob23?) gave up on the second side not wanting to deal with it after doing one side. I've had a long piece of teak in my shop for a year ready to make replacements
Mine had been on for over 15 years and I had to use a multi-tool with a knife blade to remove them. Compac had used something on them that ran the entire length. I used Life Caulk to seal the replacements, but only applied it around the screws. Trying to "glue" them on presents problems. Keeping them in place during the curing. Clamping. What adhesive to use.

Thanks, I just want to seal them not glue them, I was concerned about getting the old ones off.
