Title: Barnegat Bay
Post by: JCNJNC on July 28, 2025, 04:16:09 PM
Hi, all. I split time between North Carolina and Jersey City, NJ. I'm considering moving my new-to-me Com-Pac 19 from NC to NJ and the Barnegat Bay. I'm new to the Bay and haven't sailed there yet, but it looks great. Can you please provide some guidance on the best area(s) of the Barnegat Bay on which to sail a Com-Pac 19 and perhaps some areas to anchor out for an afternoon or possibly overnight? Also, I haven't decided whether to keep her in a slip (she is bottom-painted) or on the trailer (with the mast up) so I'd be grateful for your recommendations of where to keep her on or near the Bay. Thank you.

My experience in Barnegat is limited, however, I remember it being very shallow with a small tidal range (less than two feet in most places). Take a hard look at charts for the area.  My recollection is boats with even a modest draft must stick to the channel, especially at low tide.

Please let us know what you find!

Michael

I've been told by folks who have kept boats there, and by some who still do that a good root canal is deeper than most of BB. The inlet is mighty tricky as well. With all that said there is a curmudgeon on this forum, Bob23, that is the mayor of BB, sails a Compac 23, and is a genuinely nice guy, other than his proclivity to like PBR, an EPA listed substance! He used to set up a yearly gathering of fellow Compactanuants that I believe would anchor off of Tice's shoal. Probably best to avoid it on weekends and positively avoid it on holiday weekends unless you enjoy powerboat mania. Seek him out, a good guy.

Thank you all. I'll keep you posted on what I learn. I tried to PM Bob23 but I receive an error message when I do. Suggestions of how to contact him?

Part of it may be you don't have PM privilege yet, not sure. I sent him a PM and have not heard anything as of yet. It has been quite a while since he was active here. Hope all is ok.

It seems I don't have PM privilege yet. Hopefully, soon. I do hope all is well with Bob23, too.

I last communicated with Bob July 5th. He said he was having trouble posting. I'll drop him a text and ask him to check in. (if he can)

No I did not. Bob is obvious well as my wife said she saw a post of him in a rowing competition. I'll try sending him apic of pbr. Maybe that it will get him to respond.
