Only my opinion... CLR (Carlyle Lake Rendezvous) was fantastic this year. We had 5 boats this year since one sailor unable to attend due to family issues, and one that had boat issues, and Carl with health issues. Rich, who normally sails his 16 came along with me in my Horizon. It was wonderful to talk and sail along. Rich, you have an open invitation - anytime!
Monday - most of us arrived after travel from Ohio (Chris - Suncat), Iowa (Roger - Rob Roy). I traveled from Northern Illinois (Com Pac Horizon) to Southern Illinois. Jason (Com Pac 19) - local) and our wonderful hosts Steve and Sarah (Catalina 18). We ate, drank and were merry in the Galley of the Marina with a great pulled pork dinner supplied by Sarah.
Tuesday was race day and dawned with fog and very light winds. By start time the fog had burned off and we started with light winds. Even though the Rob Roy started last, it passed everyone and came in first. Good going Roger. Day ended with a swim raft up and then dinner locally.
Wednesday - we were under tornado watch most of the day. Only Roger went sailing while the rest of us found other things to do, like fix my trailer lights.... Dinner was a few towns away at a great place.
Thursday was a perfect top ten sailing day. Winds around 12 or so and we pretty much had the lake to ourselves. We were out sailing for 7 hours! Boy did that shower feel good! Another great dinner by Sarah of Brats with all the fixings.
Friday - some sailed while those of us who had to drive distance packed up and headed home.
All in all a great event. Sorry you missed it. Assuming Steve and Sarah agree to again host, plan on attending - well worth the effort. Carlyle Lake is a wonderful sailing lake. It is huge! You can set a course and not tack or jibe for hours.
We missed some of our regulars: Carl, Dan, and especially Randy, who passed away this year. We had a moment of silence for him and now all carry a flag in his honor that his wife made for all of us. He will not be forgotten. RIP on a port tack in 12 mph winds Randy.
Steve and Sarah are the brains and heart behind CLR. Without their efforts, it would not occur. Thanks for everything guys. You are the best! Sail On, Al
Awesome report, thanks Al! Roger is an incredible sailor. I hope when I'm as elderly as him 😉 I can still sail, but I doubt I'll ever reach his level of competence and skill.
As we were motoring west through Ohio, I glanced to my left and spotted Chris and "Second Wind" heading east. He was 100 miles from home, and we were headed to northern IL. We chatted a bit on the phone. Small world.
You just have to stay as stubborn as you are now... Then you will never give up on sailing.
I have continued to downsize as I have aged. Figured I am just about done finding simpler rigs. LOL
Best to your wife. You both were missed (you were talked about LOL)
Al
I was boasting that I had trailered my Suncat from Ohio to coastal NC, the bottom of Florida, up to Canada, the pan handle of Florida, several trips to the CLR, many local trips etc and never had a trailer tire blow out. Wouldn't you know that on my way home from CLR on the west side of Indianapolis I had my first blow out. No fun! Made it home safely though.
The ruptured tire pushed the fender up but fortunately didn't impact installing the spare tire. I'm trying to figure out how to push the fender back down to it's normal position. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Just an observation. I have participated on this site for several years, but other than a reference to CLR, I never knew what and where that was. I thought it was an unknown destination in the mid atlantic area. Turns out it is Southern Illinois. I could participate with my C16 based in NW Il at lake Carroll or trailered to Manitowoc, WI and bring some PBR for refreshment. Suggest a little more specificity for us Newbies.
Lake Carroll? Beautiful area of Illinois. Back in 2003 we looked at building there.
Kingingbug usually annouces the dates far in advance. Watch for it next year. A search should bring up plenty of info.
Yes Carl. You have mentioned that you looked at LC. I've been there for 20 years.
Al, thanks for the fantastic CLR report — it sounded like a grand occasion, indeed! Maybe next year I can get down there to participate — I'd love that! So glad to hear you are enjoying and loving your Horizon as well — wonderful!
well we all know who does all the work. so i wouldnt think of taking any credit. it is so great that you guys travel so far to carlyle. we always look forward to seeing you. as always ,
