Title: Add a bowsprit?
Post by: Urban Hermit on February 02, 2025, 01:48:52 PM
I've never seen a 16 with a bowsprit but can easily see the advantages.  Can a Mk II bowsprit be retrofitted onto a 16?  Are there other substantial differences between an 83 (MK I?) and a MK II that would make the retrofit unwise? Yes, I realize new forestay and new or recut foresails and the advantages of sheet blocks (terminology?) on tracks.

My 1983 CP16 had a bowsprit. It was installed by the CP dealer I purchased it from, Keith Scott (RIP). It certainly can be done.

Thankee, Sir. I'll hunt up some illustrations of MK IIs or MK IIIs to see how it is done.

I'd call and talk with Rich Hutchins at Com-Pac. I believe your boat can be fitted with a bowsprit. They have a great parts list for their boats-see below.

IN00B0070 BOWSPRIT COMPLETE ECLIPSE & 16 $598.00 EA.

Good luck!

in addition to the above considerations, the fractional headsail rig changes. The forestay mast tang needs to be moved up the mast from 3/4 to create a 7/8th fractional rig. Probably can use the original mast tangs and the deck attachment but will need a new forestay and if you wish to maximize the advantage of the increased headsail fraction new sails as well, in interested in the spreaders will in addition to the actual spreaders and tangs possibly new shrouds, then figure in a new bobstay, new headsail sheet tracks and cars, a new pulpit, might as well add a haus pipe for the anchor rode ...or you can buy a Mk2!

Good luck and keep us posted!
