Title: Is this a Com-Pac?
Post by: Seachelle on January 02, 2023, 08:22:21 PM
Hi, folks!

So, I came across this ad on CL; it's listed a "Clark Mills designed Suncat" -- is this a Com-Pac? Just was curious! (Curious minds want to know!)  ;D Almost looks like a bigger Picnic Cat to me. No year listed re: when the boat was made.

Pre-Compac Sun Cat designed in the late 60s and produced by a few mfgs in the early 70s with some even later. They had a detachable cabin top like a hard top convertible, were Marconi rigged, and had leeboards (or was it bilgeboards?). The whole Compac spin of saying they hired Mills to make the Suncats etc is kinda bunk because he just tweaked his existing boat from 40 years earlier.

Heres' Clark Mills' SC prototype with a full CB trunk, Marconi rigged. (I think this link works for non-members).

Early production boats had the bilge boards shown in the CL post. Both had a removable cabin.

Other early production examples.

I knew I'd seen other posts by Tom Ray on the early Sun Cats. Looks like this still has the Marconi rig, hinge is better shown.
