Title: Rendezvous in Barnegat Bay?
Post by: Bob23 on April 25, 2007, 08:12:31 PM
Anyone up for a Compac rendezvous in Barnegat Bay this summer? I know of at least 2 sailors who'd be there. Might be fun. We could limit this to both kinds of people- Compac owners and those who wish they were.
Could be an overnighter at Tice's Shoal. Think about it.

Hi,

I would be up for a Tice's shoal meet this summer.  I have a Compac 19 named Blue Heaven, it will be at Mariners Marina in Barnegat NJ hopefully by mid May. Just gotta paint the bottom and she is ready to go.

Hey Fran!
I'll be keeping my CP19(Gypsy Soul) at Mariners as well.
Might not be there until June, still have bottom work to do.

As for the 'Rendezvous', I'd be up for that!

Cool. 3 so far. I hope to be in the water on 5/05 if all goes well. We'll talk more about the rendezvous. Maybe someone can even think up a corny name...who knows, it could even turn into an annual event! And, Kev, yes your brother is certainly welcome...reassure him if there is a race, well reef so he can catch up!!!!!
    Ok, Bob23 out...gotta go!

Made my last payment on the slip and picked up my shower/restroom key.
I guess once we all have our boats in we can discuss more about the 'Rendezous'.

Can't wait now!

My slip here in Sturgeon Bay is $954.00 after tax per season.
Water and electricity not needed 'cept for maybe two battery charges a season and two top side wash jobs, no charge.
And I can use the shower for $2.00 per dip. and the 'can' for free.  But I'm only a block from my house. skip.

Oh by the way, if I want a moring ball/"can"... I can rent one from the city for $130 a season. But then I need to row, and find something to row in, and tie up the dink while I'm gone and can no longer walk down to the dock with Logan to check to see if the boat is still floating.

Or I can purchase a moring ball to use and to own season after season for the one time charge of $1000. That's too inconvenient for O' skip.

Me, well, once again I'm slipless. I choose to be floating free on a mooring. Yes, it's reassuring to be tied securely in a slip, but I've had no problems moored. But, we stray!
Launch date is soon, maybe 5/19 if all goes well. Stay tuned for more Rendezvous news!

Paid $1525 here but I believe it is worth it, I'll let you know at season's end. ;)

And yes 'Gypsy Soul' went in the water today. Looks like Fran and I are neighbors.

All,
Count me and my 23 in. I live in Beach Haven West so it's just a short couple hour sail to the North. I'm always up for Tice's.

Steve- What color is your 23? A few years ago when I was a SeaPearler, I got beat in an "informal" race by a dark blue or black or dark green 23. Was that you? It was one of the motivating factors in my selling the Pearl and looking for a 23.
I finally found one last summer and she lives in the cove just south of Lazy Point, Surf City. "Koinonia" is her name, white sails, white hull.
Look forward to seeing you at the "Pac-vous". Anyone have any thoughts about a date?

Bob,
She has a dark blue hull. I mostly sail in the Surf City area when north of the bridge. I do remember sailing with a Seapearl in that same area. The 23 is no speed demon but when sailed well it can hang. I think most people get hypnotized by their good looks and before they realize what happened they end up watching our sterns! I'm going sailing this afternoon and probably all weekend long.
As far as a date for Tice's, I'm open to suggestion. We should let the bay warm up a bit so how about mid-june/early july?

Welcome aboard Steve!
Anytime after the July 7 & 8th weekend is good.
Taking a sailing class that whole weekend.

So I'd say mid to late July, water should be nice and warm by then.

Steve- So that was you! As you know, the Pearls don't point so high and that's where I lost. However, I disagree about the speed of the 23's. Yes, they are subject to a bit more leeway than a centerboard boat but as for speed and balance, they are no slouches. I'd say the majority of the time I'm the passer and not the passee!
As far as a rendezvous date, how 'bout more than one? Mid July the air as well as the water will be warm. I can be up there in a few weeks on some saturday. I may be out tomorrow (Monday)- hope to catch you out there. But the low tide we've had the last couple of days is a bit tricky. Gotta watch where I go... I have a high stakes bet ($.25) with my father in law who maintains that this is the summer I'll have to be towed off. I replied that I'll sooner die with the ship than pay the Seatow sharks!
   Bye, Bob in "Koinonia".

As far as a date for  the "Pack 'o Pacs", how about June 16 or 23? Is a Saturday better than a Friday? How about a Sunday? Maybe we can beat some of the bugs if we go out early.

To all:
Continuing with our discussion for the 2007 Compac Raid on Tice's Shoals, how about July 14th? Water will be warm, Gypsy Soul will just have taken his sailing class and we can glean much knowledge from him before it gets assimilated into the dark caverns of that part of our brain that works less efficiently as we age- short term memory!!!!!
Maybe that 25 at Mariners will make a cameo appearance also. They only draw 2 feet, I think- plenty of water for him there.

Kev-
I see your'e doing homework on the Name. Compac Convergenace '07 sounds good. Whatever the name, let's do it. I almost made it to the Shoals yesterday but turned around and had the motorsail  of my life! July 14th ok for everyone? Hey, Fran, oh Fran, wherefore art thou? And, Steve, 7/14 ok?
A correction on my 6/02 post: the 25's draw about 3 feet, not 2 feet. Duh!

Ok, it's coming together. Hey, Fran, I don't want to have Gypsy Soul pester you in person down there at Mariners so is 7/14 ok?
I just had a thought that this might interfere with the Blackburn Challenge but a quick visit to thier site proved me wrong..that's on 7/21. I won't row this year but I'd still like to observe.
   Hey...does anyone row out there?
   Another correction...the 25 draws 2'6"(thanks kev)

Aye, then July 14th it is, me mateys!! Now all we need is good weather...because of the the distance from my home port, I will probably make this an overnighter.
Another potential journey is the rounding of Cape Horn. It can be done in small boats such as ours; I plan on completing an east to west rounding this summer. Any takers? Can my 23 take the beating that is imminent? Only time will tell.
(Oh, this CH is in NJ, not South America. A bit closer and warmer, too.)

Post by: K3v1n on June 21, 2007, 07:36:03 AM
With the beginning of summer I thought it appropriate to bump the thread to remind everyone about the sail-to-gether in July. I believe we are still on but don't know any more details than that. I guess we'll wing it.

Kev:
As you know, I'll be there. Don't know what time, I'll shoot for an early am departure. I don't need too much of an excuse to sail.
Should be fun, checking out each others ships, hearing tales of near death experiences, etc. Maybe we can see who can make up the most outlandish fish-tale!
   Ciao!!!

Hey Guys,
Sounds like Bob, Fansbro, Kevin and Steve so far.  What's the itinerary?  I am contemplating the 11 hour drive from Michigan with my 19 and am wondering if its a one day sail and lunch or a weekend cruise.  I'm also surprised that there aren't more boats out there.  Does everyone know?
What would it be like if I came out and I wanted to overnight?  Are there guest slips?
Marcus

Marcus:
Itinerary is laid back, as in none. I just came up with this on a whim- to get a bunch of Compac-tors together. We plan on meeting at a place called Tice's Shoals on Island Beach State Park in Barnegat Bay where we can anchor/raft up, walk across to the ocean and swim. There are no slips. In my opinion, this is a unique place here in NJ because it seems that everything in our state is regulated except for Tice's Shoals!
Is it worth it? Might be. We hope for good weather. On any summer weekend, there could be a hundred boats anchored there for fun, BBQ's, whatever.
I've got to sail from Surf City and plan on overnighting at TS.
TS, by the way is 39 degrees 48' N Lat; 74 degrees 06' W  Long.

Ok, we're comin' down to the home stretch. Accuweather says nice for Saturday; I'll see what NOAA has to say. I'll probably cast off Surf City around 6-7 am. I'll have the vhf set to channel 16. See you all there! Bob in "Koinonia"

Okay I should be ready to go. Picked up a new battery and plan on getting my lights working this evening and hooking up my VHS radio. Most likely won't leave the slip until 10 or so. I could plan earlier but I just know it won't ever happen.

Also my brother and his two sons will be joining us as well, he has a Skipper 20.
Hope to see you all on the water!

To All:
Gypsy Soul (Kevin) will probably write up a full account of the 2007 Compac Convergence now that he's recovering, but while waiting, I thought I'd give my abbreviated account.
Saturday afternoon we all sailed in together at Tice's Shoals to be greeted by the famous Tice's Shoal Topless Sunbathing Womens' crew. Sailing in with no motor, we surprised a few young ladies looking to erase thier tan lines and, due to a navigational error on my part, we anchored not too far away. I don't think they were too impressed by the 3 old farts on sailboats, and, frankly, we were too busy anchoring to pay them much attention. But it was a nice welcome committee!
We enjoyed swimming in the Atlantic, quite clean and refreshing and basically, had no concrete plans or schedules to keep. That is, in itself, mucho funo!!!
I myself came quite unprepared due to a busy workweek but, Kev the Gypsy Souler came through with flying colors. About the only thing he didn't bring was, well, come to think of it...he brought everything. We enjoyed a classic NJ sunset helped down by 2 cold 'Ronnas.
Kev's bother John was allowed to attend because he is a direct relative of a Compac owner. He brought 2 of his kids and together, they cleaned out the Barnegat Bay of crabs! A fun time was had by all, no boats broke loose and I awoke to a beautiful NJ sunrise. All in all, a beautiful weekend.
I had to depart early the next morning (08:30) to get home by the afternoon, knowing I'd be taking the wind on the nose for the last trek down the channel to my home port of Surf City, NJ. After 3 1/2 hrs of tacking under reefed main and jib, I had to motor the next 1 1/2 hours. The old Nissan 8 was earning it's keep. A flawless performance. I pulled into my mooring to cheering crowds, happy to see me return from such a long and rigorous voyage! Life afloat... you gotta love it, even if only for a weekend!!
I'll end here because GS will compose a better account of all the happenings. We are tentatively planning another convergence of some kind this summer. YOU are invited!
Fair winds to all...Bob 23 in "Koinonia" and a special thanks to the TSTSWC!

Well I missed the "convergence", got called into the Hospital Friday night.  Sounds like you all had a great time, am looking forward to the story.  We came down Sunday morning and were thinking of meeting up with you before you left, but it was blowing pretty good.  We decided to hang out and fish near our marina.  Hope to make it the next time.  Happy sailing.

COMPCON 07..........Tice's Shoal

Wow what a trip!

Was up early to pack and made it to the marina by ten I guess it was. Received a call from Bob stating the fact that there was no wind and he had motored up from Surf City to about Gulf Point and was headed for a pit stop in Waretown to wait for wind.

About elevenish my brother and I departed as the wind filled and we met up with Bob and off we were to Tice's Shoal. Excellent sail out, about an hour and a half. John lagged behind a bit so we waited for him to catch up and pick an anchorage. And yes there was one young lady without a top but she had things covered up and we were at a safe distance, but non-the-less it caught our attention.

Bob and Koinonia............John and Panache

We quickly anchored our vessels and once I thought I had Gypsy Soul secured Bob brought Koinonia along side for a raft up. Not ten minutes later we noticed our boats drifting towards a large cabin cruiser. Swiftly Bob casted off as we had to re-anchor this time deciding to keep our boats separate. It seems my Bruce anchor didn't like the weedy bottom and in time I relocated into shallower waters and set the anchor by hand in a sandy patch.

Robin swiming and as you can tell by the waves the wind continued to build as the afternoon went on.

To be con't.....

All,

Steve-
Sounds great...looking forward to meeting you. The 23 is a sturdy ship and a wet one, too, when motoring into that kind of wind. Ahh...nothing like a taste of the old briney! Maybe I'll put my dodger back on! I'd like to check your 23 out...I'm never too old to learn.
A slight correction: Gypsy Souls account of the topless sunbathing episode is closer to the truth than mine. Just using a bit of journalistic license, I suppose. Our politicians do it every day. Well, no, they just flat out lie.
GS was mentioning a possible mini-convergence down there at egg island this summer. I haven't looked at the charts... we or he will keep us posted, I suppose.
Ciao! Bob in Koinonia ( I hope this weekend)

Oh, on a note of sorrow, I think I lost my old Tilley sailing hat after arriving at ome post on  Sunday.  If I can't find it, twill be a great loss... it was well broken in and dirty and the brass grommets were green and it fit just right and, and, well-I can't go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaa
