Ahoy all you Com-Pac sailors and CLR nuts. This is ROGER the former Sun Cat owner. Sold the Sun Cat last spring and went the summer with what I hoped would fill its place a RC boat, didn't work at all. Started looking and bugging the wife for a boat this winter. She gave in and I found a boat in Florida that I hope works out. Save a place of me at this years CLR because I plan on being there Steve. If you want to know what I bought you are going to have to come to the CLR to find out, it's not a Com-Pac. Thinking of going back to the North Chanel of Lake Huron in 2021. The greatest place I've found to sail. Hope to see everyone at the CLR.
ROGER
Welcome Roger!
We hope to be at CLR also. Very good to see you have another boat.
Welcome back Roger! I enjoyed meeting you at CLR and sailing aboard your Suncat. And I'm anxious to see what you are sailing these days too.
This isn't a threat or a promise but I'm planning to be at CLR again this year as well. I'll be bringing the CLC Skerry I bought last fall affectionately named "Little Blue Boat". Astute readers might guess the color! We've rowed this boat to victory at the Head of the Weir rowing race last fall in Hull, MA. Took first place in our division- masters double fixed oar. Masters meaning the combined 139 years of us, not an indication of our rowing level.
Cheers! Bob23
Roger.... welcome back to the sailing community. I look forward to seeing you at CLR I am planning on attending especially since the virus scare should be over.
Where in Florida did you have to travel to for the boat?
Al
I stayed with my mean old step mother in St. Petersburg. The weather was great, then came home to 2" of snow and cold. Picked the boat up just a little east of there and pulled home. If your still in Florida you should stay there a week or two at least.
Roger,
In my mind I was thinking you sold your Suncat because the waters of the North Channel wore you down and broke your sailing spirit. Especially after you fell off your boat outside of Kilarney and visited Davey Jone's Locker. I guess I was wrong. I'm happy your going to be sailing again and look forward to seeing you at CLR!
I may want to go back up north again as well. I would love to go to the FL120 and thought about it but I can't this May.
Looking forward to seeing you,
Chris Second Wind
I don't recall anyone but me falling off a boat. I did it in Spanish as i was returning from the showers with fresh clothes on and plenty of spectators on the dock. Did you know that every action has an opposite and equal reaction? Like stepping into a loosely tied dingy. Something about physics if i recall. I'm sure they were laughing, but I was only concerned with not losing my sunglasses and wallet. 8)
I did have to pay the restaurant with wet currency that evening, good thing Canadian money is plastic.
I hope Roger bought a slower boat so I can keep up with him. If not, it would only be fair if someone inconspicuously attached a small sea anchor to his boat. ;)
well Carl the new boat is more than a couple feet longer and has a couple more sails. For that reason you are wrong again for sure. You'll all have to come to the CLR to see what I bought. And yes I did fall in the water when the boat was at anchor in Canada.
ROGER
happy to hear that you are back sailing again. it would be a shme to waste all that talent. sure hope we have a CLR this year so we can see the new Catalina you bought. hahaha
Welcome back Roger!
I hope the new one works out for you. There are plenty of items from your old kit that I don't and probably won't use. If you're interested we could work something out.
Renae
Didn't think I'd be sailing again, but was wrong again. Would be interested in a lot of what was left on board when I sold the boat to you. Get a hold of me some time and let me know what items your talking about.
ROGER
Sounds good. Let me know if your boat works out. I sailed quite a bit last year, but with the circumstances and my job I don't know how much I'll get out this year. I'm hoping a lot. It's my happy place.
I'll be in touch.
lets start a pool-----im betting on a Catalina. what does everyone else say?
im probably wrong, roger is pretty much the king of catboats.
That's two strikes, one more and you out. You'll never figure out what I bought for a boat this time, it is a sail boat and it's bigger than the Sun Cat.
ROGER
you could give us a hint. is it a sloop?
That's the third strike and your out. You can keep guessing but you don't have a chance, they only made about a hundred of this model of boat.
ROGER
seems like either matt or bob might have a chance guessing it
I'll take a stab at it....McGregor Newport Cutter?
Um, maybe Alerion Express 19 Catboat?
Believe it or not Carl was partly right for once, it does have three sails but not a cutter. That's a good clue in my book. Lets have a few more guesses.
ROGER
Interesting. Could it be a ketch, or a yawl?
That Carl has been doing some real head scratching. Yes the builder calls it a yawl, the aft smaller mast is behind the tiller. It's a little over twenty feet long on deck and twenty eight feet over all. There's another clue clew for all of you. I'm trying to think of a prize for the winner but not to worried about it, you will never figure it out.
ROGER
Still scratching here.
A nimble 20 would be too short.
How about an Eddy & Duff Shearwater 28 Cat Yawl?
A couple real good guesses but not wright of course. Most of these boats that I have seen are a dark green, but have found a few pictures of boats with white hulls. Those my have been painted or special orders. Keep on guessing but haven't figured out a prize for a winner if there is one.
ROGER
This gives me something to do while we're locked down.
Tell me about it. Living in a fifty five and over complex they quarantined us just because we had been out of state. The longest two week I spent and with a new to me boat sitting outside. While sitting here I ordered roller furler and hardware to run all the lines to the cockpit. Did a little spring cleaning and still had time for more than a couple naps. Here's your hint for today, the motor is in a well in the cockpit.
ROGER
Rog:
Is this a Phil Bolger design?
Bob23
No, it's a by a boat builder that has produced to the best of my maybe six or seven different designs. The cabin and combing to me look like they belong on a cat boat. I'll keep the clues coming but it's only a few months till CLR.
ROGER
Is it wood or glass? How about a Crab Claw? 8) Sail On Al
It is glass and have no idea what a Crab Claw. I do owen a nail claw for digging out nails.
ROGER

Norwalk sharpie
LOL. Sorry Roger. A friend in Florida bought a Crab Claw. It was a 21 foot wooden piece of crap shaped like a catamaran. Had a cabin, a mizzen and a wooden mast, boom. It was made in Vermont, and painted with porch paint! It rotted away and he replaced it with a SunCat called Cat Nip. I did not mean to offend. LOL Sail On, Al BTW, I can hardly wait to see this craft that no one seems to be able to guess.
nimble 24 tropic
OK, here is my boat guess based on what features I know Roger was looking to add to his Suncat. These features are on the Precision 18. He would prefer to have the P-21 but it wouldn't fit in his garage so he settled with the P-18. Right Roger?
You have come up with a few good and a lot of bad boats and not even close boats, but none what I bought. The new to me boat has a swing down center board and rudder. What more can I tell you with out spelling it out for you.
ROGER
Guess we'll all just have to show up at CLR this summer to find out!
Bob23
sure hope things are better by the last week of june. at this point west access marina is open as well as the boat ramp. the swimming beach is closed as is hazlett state park. I haven't checked on the motels and resteraunts as yet.
is it a BayCruiser from Swallow Yachts?
Your getting real close with that guess but no ringer. It is a traditional sailor with bow sprit and boomkin. Keep guessing, what else do we have to do besides work on our boats. Put the two mast up yesterday and rigged the booms. Did a couple honey do projects this morning. This after noon plan on bending on the three sails. Hope they don't close the boat ramps before I'm ready to splash her for my first time.
ROGER
what does she weigh?
So you wonder what she weighs. Not a nice thing to ask a lady. Any way she weights in at 2'200 pounds and carries 264 square feet of sail. What more can I tell you about her with out telling you the manufacturer. Some one out there should come up with the right boat. And Chris this boat won't fit in the garage, dam it.
ROGER
Gotta be a Melges 24 the third sail being an asym. Roger? Nah, too expensive and too tough to sail for an older sailor like ROGER!
TG
this thing has a mizzen right?
blue moon 22
A couple more wrong guesses and how's calling how old anyway. Starting to lead the lines aft to the cockpit to get her ready to splash. Sure am going to miss the simplicity of the Sun Cat. I'm running out of clues for you. Well she has two oval brass port on each side of the cabin. Not much of a clue but the best I could do. Blue Moon, isn't that some old song from long ago.
ROGER
Not something I would typically ask of a lady, but how's her backside? Is it wide & flat? Or is she a double ender?
You can tell the bow from the stern even though they both come to a point. She looks as if she could have been build of wood but she is all fiberglass. She also has a motor well in the cockpit, never sailed a boat set up this way, hope it works out well. She was build in the 80's but could have been build much before that from her lines. She only has two bunks down below and the bow area is storage and the head are. Come on there must be someone out there that has a good idea what she is.
ROGER
how about a flika or an alegra?
Robroy?
That's a great guess right there.. I saw those, don't now why I didn't guess that one..
Hey Kick: The Flicka's are only 20 feet long....don't ask how I know this....might be starting a rumor here!
Bob23
Well that was a great guess and you came up the winner. I though about getting the winner two cans of PBR, but what would a person do with the other four cans. The Rob Roy takes longer to set up than a Sun Cat but lots more room down below. Haven't sailed her yet and don't have a name for her. Hope to see you all at the CLR.
ROGER
Roger,
That looks like a very cool boat. I just read this article on it.
https://issuu.com/southwinds/docs/southwindsseptember2010/36
I hope you're able to have some fun with it.
Regards,
Keith
She's a beauty Roger. I'll take all the PBR's as a consolation prize at CLR 2020!
Bob23
Keep the pbr, I'll have a dry red.
I was kinda rootin' for the M24:(
man I sure hope we can have the rendezvous. I have got to sail on that boat/ even though its not a catalina
Roger. Looks like you have a keeper. Where did you find it and what shape is it in? The article said 90 boats were made. What number is yours? Looking forward to CLR so we all can see this beauty. Sail On. Al
Well Steve it isn't a Catalina, but I'm happy with what I bought. Waiting for my first sail myself, she needs a lot of tender loving care first. Adding roller furling and running the lines to the cockpit and lots of little things that take me lots of time. The deck needs paint but no time this year for that. Have to get her in the water and put some miles under her keel. Al this is boat number 59 and bought her in Sanford, Florida. See you all at the CLR.
