Title: Compac 16 Spreader repair
Post by: bps on January 05, 2020, 09:41:04 PM
Hello,
I've been looking for the right Compac 16 for me.  I've found a Craigslist ad, and it looks good.  Seller indicates that the spreader broke during the last sail last year.  Is this an easy fix?  I've also seen a Siren 17 that looks nice as well.  I'd be coastal sailing in SC.  Appreciate any input

thanks,
Bernard

Hutchins had the parts and should be no big deal to repair. To be honest you really don't even need the spreaders for a 16 and she will sail just fine.

My 16/1 has no spreaders. I believe it was the 16/3 that feature them? I agree with Mas in that she really doesn't need them.

Thanks for the input.  Didn't think it was an issue but thought I'd ask.  Will be my first sailboat since decades ago.

Several boats that I used to repair when I was in that business had wooden spreaders, so no issue at all even if you decided to build them. I think all the Compacs have used aluminum pipe though so easy fix either way.

The spreaders appeared with the 16/2's at the same time they went from a 3/4 to 7/8ths fractional rig with the bowsprit.

from the Hutchins parts list:

MR00S0071
S SPREADER - 16/2
$21.50

MR00S0072
S SPREADER BASE -16/2
$15.00

Bernard:
Welcome to the site! Allow me to introduce myself: I am Bob23 and Bob23 is me. I'm the official collector of the $5000.00 initiation fee for the privilege of joining this wacky bunch of Compac-o-nauts! But you seem like a nice guy and as incentive to get you back into sailing, I'm choosing to waive the fee! Please don't let this get around or everyone will want a refund!
Welcome....we look forward to hearing about your adventures! I hope you can acquire that 16!

bob23,  Do I always have to be the one to remind you about the 10% increase in the initiation fee?  Bernard, please mail the additional, unwaived, $500 to me.

Tim Gardner, Your fiendly Fleet Admiral.

Gee guys, you're going to confuse and scare Bernard away, don't you know. You'll have him thinking he could should buy the Siren and look for a siren group.

Bernard pay no attention to those two behind the curtain. Later you and I can talk about the real bargain membership rates.

There is a fine article down the page at   http://www.sailboatrichlands.com/   that describes the cp16 as "the best boat in the world to learn to how to sail" . Don't know if that's true but It has to be one of the safest in that size. Loved mine when I had it.
