While I am in the throws of re-furbishing my 27 I am also going through all the cd's that I had on board and a question has come up.
When out on your favorite body of water and that "just right" consistant breeze has come out of the southeast and the boat is almost sailing herself, what is your favorite cd playing in the background?

While I want to say Jimmy Buffet music, in reality, my wife and I really enjoy sailing along with listensing to John Denver CD's. His music works very well out on the water.
I kinda prefer Crosby Stills Nash and Young and some of the more mellow Tull... or perhaps some good Windahm Hill stuff.
Regardless of what you listen to... I just implemented a new system for the boat... (my $20 boom box died) and I had most of my music on the MP3 player now... so I found this GREAT self contained powered speaker. It straps under the stern seat unless we're getting too much spray... then it goes in the cabin. Either way, it fills the boat with crisp music.. it has an AC adapter for home, but it will play for 50 hrs on a set of 4 AAs and takes any MP3 Player with it's own earphone jack.
They used to list for $120, but I got mine for around $40 at Amazon.com
The model is Logitech MM28 Portable Speaker

Thanks for the input.... I haven't as yet graduated to the mp3 world, and really don't know why I have been holding out. Probably should bite the bullit and start considering the option for space/storage reasons if nothing else.

I made a "sailing cd", where I burned my favorite "sailing" songs on the cd to listen to. I don't usually listen to music while I'm sailing, as I prefer the relaxing natural sounds of the wind & water, but when I'm elsewhere and want to "go to the sea", I listen to the cd. Some of the songs I have on it are:

Kenny Chesney recorded a "nautical" cd called "Be As You Are". It's a really good, mellow sound and all the songs refer to the sea or beach in some form.

I know a lot of you sailors/boaters have an affinity for Jimmy Buffett. But for my crew and I we prefer Kenny Chesney. Nothing against Mister B but we like Kenny and thought we would chart our own course.
It all started with the CD "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems" and then came "When the Sun Goes Down" and the song "Outta Here". With the CD "Be As You Are" he really caught on with us and now he is the "Official Soundtrack" of Gypsy Soul.
So to all you Buffett fans keep at it but if you want to try something new give Kenny a try. I guess I should be worried that my wife just loves him to death. In fact she came up with the name for our CP19 from Kenny's song You save me.
"It's hard lovin' a man that's got a Gypsy Soul." ;)

As a country western music listener I second the Kenney Chesney recommendation. Chesney is a boater too. But, don't discount my comment re John Denver music.
Carole and I typically spend 6-8 hours each weekend on our boat and listen to music 90% of the time. Although, occassionally we shut it off to listen to the wind and the waves as Ralph mentioned. Speaking of Ralph, his CD sounds like a good one.
All we need here in Pennsylvania is some warm weather so we can get back out on the water.

I didn't mean to discount John Denver at all, however I am only familiar with his early music and can't get out of my mind the "Thank God I'm a country boy" lyrics when I think of him. Not exactly "boat music" and I'm sure not his best work. Does he have any new music out and in particular does he have an album out that you would recommend?

Now that you mention it, Gil, I used to listen to John Denver all the time. I somehow let him drop by the wayside, but have fond memories, and will surely re-introduce him to my collection.
All this talk of music prompted me to finally purchase an ipod over the weekend. Those who have an mp3 player know how great they are, and those who are holding off getting one, my advice is wait no longer. You won't believe how they simplify your music. To think that virtually all my music will eventually be on this machine is just amazing! I've managed to so far copy 523 songs from my cd collection! I have quite a ways to go, but I'm sure I'll never fill the 30 GB it will hold. I think I may even purchase the Logitec portable speaker that Dale mentioned, and listen to music on the boat! But to be able to have all your music in your pocket - wow! I even downloaded episodes of the TV show "Lattitudes and Attitudes" (by the editor of the magazine of the same name), and can watch them on the ipod. We don't get the show on our cable network.
Anyhow, in addition to the songs I previously mentioned, I now also have in my "sailing" playlist on my ipod the following songs:

Dale's idea was a good one but I don't have an Ipod or MP3 player. No jokes about my LP's as I don't have them anymore either and I do have satellite radio in my new truck.
We use a portable FM / CD player on the boat powered by my solar/battery system. I also have UHF/VHF two way radio , including marine band and cell phone. Lots of technology for an older chap despite no Ipod. I applaud Dale and Ralph for their application of digital music technology to the marine world.

Oh.. one thing I forgot to mention... a real bonus with the MP3 player...
If you already have an FM radio stereo system on the boat ( I had a cheap "boom box" CD/FM) you can use a little device that transmits the music to that radio. You plug it into the earphone jack on the MP3 player and it transmits on a variety of frequencies... if you get interference from a strong station, you can move up to the next frequency. I used the "IROCK BEAMIT" (around $20) before my boom box died and I got the powered speakers... but it works great in the car... When I think of the old suitcase of Cassette Tapes followed years later by the folders of CDs... it's amazing to have an entire music collection at your fingertips on something that fits in the palm of your hand. I know that everyone on this forum knows how to use a computer and the software that comes with the players makes simple the task of transferring and organizing music... once you get it on the drive... make a safety file on a DVD or another drive and you're set. AMAZING...

Wow! I love music, but, while out on the water, what's wrong with the sound of the wind and the water? I enjoy listening to the sounds that the vessel underway has to offer. I often sail solo and admit to being a bit of a contemplative sort so this suits me just fine. As they say, whatever floats your boat, right? Bob
