Title: One of our own needs your help
Post by: crazycarl on September 27, 2019, 11:50:36 AM
there is an individual here that desperately needs our help.  he doesn't know it, but he does.  i find his antics pitiful.  although my wife thinks very highly of him, but then, she married me.

most of you have probably noticed he tries desperately to fit in.  all new comers have been subjected to his threats of "cousins" visiting, but his most hurtful posts are those where he mentions those three horrible letters...PBR.  in a way i feel sorry for him, not knowing the true happiness of finding a fine tasting brew.  maybe it's not his fault.  he does reside in new jersey after all.

what i am proposing is an intervention.  i don't expect anyone to travel to new jersey, sit in a circle and tell him what, as an adult, is expected of him.   heck, i wouldn't go there if a bag of cash was waiting for me.  no, what i propose is we all send him our favorite brew so that he can see what is beyond the jesery shores.

i know what ALL of you are thinking.  why should i help this guy, i don't even like him.  why?  because if we don't help him, someone else may, and we could be stuck him constantly pushing Zima on us!

who's with me!?!?!?!

I took a trip to Portland OR a number of years back.  At the time Portland was the Mecca of the craft beer world in the US.  The only pale American lager you could find on tap anywhere in town was PBR.  No Bud, Miller, Coors...   Just PBR.  Not saying I wanted a light lager at any point in my trip, or that any of the alternatives are better or worse.  Just saying, if your going to drink piss water, and it's okay for the folks who drank some of the best beers around at the time, it can't be all that bad...  Or maybe they just kept it on tap for those pore folks from Jersey who were visiting family...

I spent my formative years in the 'burbs of St. Louis, MO.  Home of, at the time one, of the largest breweries in North America.  If you have ever taken the tour of the AB facility in St. Louis, you know what an experience it is.  I've done it a dozen times and it never gets old.

I think you can guess what kind of beer we drank back then (Late '70s).  It wasn't Bud.  No, we drank the cheapest that we could find being poor teenagers.  Any others want to guess?   Well, it varied as to what was on sale.  Most of the time it was Busch, Busch Light, or if we wanted to splurge, Michelob.  To be honest, there wasn't much else available then in the stores.  Maybe PBR, Schlitz,  Blatz, Colt 45,  and a little later the imports showed up (Lowenbrau, which wasn't by any means German, although it was a bit heavier than most of the Lagers we were used to),  Heineken,  then Miller was able to break the blockade and the others followed, Coors was a big success in St. Louis, more so than anything from Miller.  To be honest, I've never had a PBR.  It has a less than stellar reputation in STL.  Can't imagine why.

Also, those Lagers were fairly light in Alcohol compared to the Euro stuff.  I could drink Busch, Busch Light or Miller Light, all day for hours and never get more than slightly buzzed.  Bud gave me a headache but wouldn't get me drunk.  I'd sweat or pee it out faster than I could drink it when out water skiing or sailing.

I had my fill back then, I don't have but one a month these days.  Usually Michelob.  With Pizza.

While I can't imagine who you might be talking about, I think an intervention is a splendid idea for one with such an affliction.  I suggest we kidnap him and take him the short distance to Pottsville, PA and make him tour the original Yuengling brewery.  Keep in mind he will need to take baby steps to move up from PBR and Yuengling traditional lager is just that step.  Also it is my everyday brew when I get tired of all those craft things my sons try to push on me, many of which are simply in the competition to see who can jam the most hops in a 12 oz bottle.

Carl just wait.  White Castle just announced today to have their own branded beer in the future.  What more could you ask for, a bag of sliders and a beer to complement the delicious burgers.

Well I for one am appalled that the administrators would even allow such a one into this prestigious group of highly intellectual sailors- what were you guys thinking? Obviously not very much. Much more astonishing is that Joannie would "think highly of him". I've met her and she always struck me as someone who is a good judge of character but as you said, she did marry you so there's the proof of at least one lapse of judgement!

Carl, I'm with you! I've searched high and low on the forum here and can't figure out who this curmudgeonly individual might be. I think we can only appeal to him to turn himself in to the CPYOA police, perhaps the judge will go lightly on him for this heinous crime of which he is so obviously guilt! Lord be merciful!!

So you say this trouble maker is from New Jersey? That's my state...tell me where I can find him and I will personally execute swift judgement- is there a bounty? I could use some money to support my own beer habit although these days I'm leaning more toward 10 year old Scotch!

Carl, some may accuse you of being a whistle blower but to me you are a hero! Hat's off to Crazy Carl me hearties- may his mast ever point high and his waterline remain outside his boat!! Hip hip hooray!! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!!!

As the longest serving (some would say oldest) daily active administrator on this site, I claim the power to adjudicate this matter.  Insofar as this curmudgeonly Tar has not seen fit to abstain from this Disgusting PBR habit, and that whomsoever doth agree that PBR is a stain (at least on his shirt), I shall take pity upon him.

I hereby pardon this wretched soul for his past PBR deeds and all future transgression he may commit by drinking this vile stuff.

Tim Gardner, Fleet Admiral, Extraordinaire. ( you may call me Your Timness)

Okay Bob, Pass me another PBR. (did I write that?)

From a post for CBMWG:

"Oasis Beverages, which is based in Russia, acquired Pabst Brewing Company in 2014 and is now headquartered in Los Angeles, not Milwaukee. Pabst traces its roots to 1844 and owned a number of well-known American beer brands, including Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Schlitz and the malt liquor Colt 45. Basically the only decent American beer companies are the craft beer makers that have not sold out to the big boys. BUY LOCAL, BUY HEALTHY, just like cheap food, cheap beer is horrible for your health and our economy. Sorry guys, I used to drink it as well but made the decision to change years ago and haven't looked back. At one point decades ago, Pabst was a quality drinkable lager, sadly no more."

Jus sayin, but regardless some bling may be in order for Bob since he was locked out from any chance to defend himself!
