Title: Trailer Work
Post by: AirborneJarhead on July 31, 2019, 10:00:44 AM
Just completed replacing my axle and hubs on my Magic Tilt. I used a 2000 pound axle sourced from Northern Tool. It was the square, galvanized 1.5 inch model that I got for around $70. The hubs were the 1350 lb Ultra Tows from Northern Tool as well. Unfortunately, none of their springs would fit the Magic Tilt trailer so I guess I'll have to source those elsewhere.
The work was pretty straight forward and the axle mounted up nicely using a new set of brackets also sourced from Northern Tool. She towed nicely for the 35 mile trip home from Lake Norman. This Saturday, the wife and I are taking her to Swansboro, NC for some saltwater sailing! It's about a 250 mile trip from Charlotte. We may even overnight on her, depending on the weather. Wish us luck!

Jarhead, by chance can you share what length axle you purchased (hub face, etc.)?  I've been looking at their axle kits, and was pretty sure they would fit (even the springs), as my trailer is 25+ years old and dipped in salt water/brackish fairly often.

I thought I could use one one of these: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200648988_200648988 (https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200648988_200648988)
but would need to know the hub face or spring distance.  I think I remember finding one with the same sized springs.

I regret when I placed hubs years ago I didn't switch to 5-hole patterns, just put exactly the same 4-hole 8-inch wheels that were there.  I believe long distance ales would be better with the larger wheels (just my opinion).  Any change in trailer height due to larger wheels could be offset with an axle above the springs like in the picture.

I Pasted the link to the part I purchased. I already had 5 lug hubs and replaced them with similar Ultra Tow 5 on 4 1/2 wheel pattern hubs.
The hub face was 59 1/2" with an overall length of 64 1/2"

Sure did! 560 mile round trip with no trailer issues to report.

I'd like to hear about the trip!  I've crossed the bridge at Swansboro many times and wondered how it would be as a sailing destination.
