Title: Carpet on the cabin walls
Post by: Chris D on May 25, 2019, 08:15:55 AM
Hey All,
Anyone have an opinion on applying carpet to the cabin walls? I am in the middle of a refurbish and was thinking that it would make the interior more comfortable,as well as cut down on condensation. Mold and mildew fest or glorious comfort?

Mold and mildew are controllable issues really, one can seal the boat up properly as far as leaks, then also keep ventilated properly, and a proper desiccant style material to take care of residual.

I personally like the carpet in my 19, which I replaced when I fully redid the boat. The carpet that was in it before also carried a certain smell but the boat when purchased had been neglected for 10 years and also no control methods in place to prevent such issues.
I have owned for several years and my Ex wife and I used to take care of that meticulously to keep that from being a issue.

My vote is the specific carpet which can be purchased from Sailrite, including the spray adhesive. It can be a tedious job but well worth the effort I feel.

MacGyver,
Thank you for your response. There was carpet glued to the berths when I got it and probably helped to rot them out. It was incredibly difficult to remove and I wound up cutting the berths out anyway. So it goes.  I won't be applying carpet to the new berths, but it did seem like some on the walls would make it a bit more comfy.  I have some indoor/outdoor backless carpet that I was thinking of using. It would certainly a bit less expensive than sailrite.

The Hutchins 2018 price list showed Geometric hull liner for $36/square yard. I f that means it is cut to fit the 16 cabin, may be a labor saver.

Just did my boat with Sailrite 102635 HullBlanket Headliner, Sand color, $19.95 per running yard, 72" wide. Much better solution than carpet. Sailrite has great how-to videos. You just need a carpet knife and the 3M spray adhesive. The material stretches slightly to allow nice smooth corners. Highly recommended.

Thanks Wes. That does seem to be quite reasonable.

Be sure to ventilate well when using the 3M adhesive.  I used a heavy duty mask with filters, and still felt it.

I would recommend using a fan to exhaust the air in cabin, and will do so myself next time.  Lesson learned.

The 3M adhesive is on year 3 and working well.  I only had to reapply the factory liner to cabin ceiling after replacing bow pulpit rail.
