Title: So what do you do when sailing season ends
Post by: Mas on November 28, 2018, 08:44:47 PM
Well for those of us who don't have the fortune of year round sailing ya gotta have something to keep your sails filled. Been watching a few of the various Youtube sailing adventures from folks that are posting regular episodes of their escapades. Engaging in boat porn as my wife calls it. Even though we have zero intentions of ever selling our boats anytime soon, I also find myself looking at boats for sale, how to videos, and of course planning projects to make life aboard easier. Left Interlude winterized and tucked in for the winter this morning and spent much of the morning sitting aboard pondering the next season already.

So anyone else find themselves doing much the same?!

Confused. What do you mean by "sailing season?"

Cheers from North Carolina

YouTube is a great escape but the wife does give me eyes if the female companion is under 30 and/or wearing something never to be seen on our sailboat. I have a master list of supplies/parts that will be purchased when Defender has it's spring sale. Halyards, hoses, etc. The biggest thing for me is saying YES to all of Admiral's weekend adventures. As we drive to these landlocked museums, gardens, pumpkin patches, tree farms, and apple orchards I imagine myself on the water come May with a beer in hand.

The folks who have it made at our sailing club (not me) in upstate NY are the ones who ski. Somewhere in internet world there must be a forum where someone has just asked, "What do you do when ski season ends?"

Sailing season ends?  Well, I have winter where I live, the boat stays in the water winterized which in my case drain the water system, put in some anti freeze so the pump won't crack, remove anything that might freeze and set up the air dry heater.  However, I still sail, just have to pick the weather.  Sunday will be 69F with SW winds, clocking to northwest overnight.  That is a perfect sail out spend the night and sail back time period.  So I'm going.

Me too, Brack.  I will be sailing Sunday am, and slurping down oysters at our annual Pearl Harbor day oyster roast at Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke in the later afternoon.  Can't wait.

I read sailing blogs, check Craigslist for boat supplies and start the list of projects for the spring.

This past Saturday on my way back from our plot of land up North MN I saw a couple ice boats out flying across a glass smooth frozen lake.   Hmmm, maybe I need to start looking for one of those... It sure looked fun!!  They had to be doing 40+ mph in about a 10 knot breeze.  Only thing is once there's a couple inches of snow on the ice that season is done quicker than it started.  I'd say you're lucky to get one good outing a year around here.   I'll probably just stick to dreaming of the sunny warm days to come next spring.

That's our MO as well! We move off of the boat by December and up to Wintergreen for the ski and snowboard season. Hey...it's water, just frozen variety!

Beautiful area in upstate, but there are about a half dozen reasons we wouldn't choose to be there and they start with November! Might visit some though.  :)

Reighnman, as far as I know there is no dress code on a sailboat.  While on a bareboat cruise in the BVI, it became apparent that some boats were clothing optional and at least one must have been clothing prohibited.

Tim, curious as to where oysters are coming from in your area of the world.  Reefs in Apalachicola in real trouble, Mississippi coast not so good either, most oysters I've had are either coming from TX or LA.  The Apalach oysters were always the best.

Yep, I do the ski thing too, but usually wait till March and go to Colorado.

Down here in SW Florida we are really hoping the cooler weather will help minimize the red tide issue. The grass is not always greener, sometimes it is redder.

after an early winter storm, i finished de-icing the boat this morning in preparation for indoor storage tomorrow.

after the boat is away, i spend winters reading sailing adventure books, working in my wood shop, small game hunting, and shooting. a lot of shooting.

winter is also my favorite time of the year to hike through the woods.  snow covering everything and no one else to contend with.

true peace and serenity, same as sailing!

if i can't get to the woods, i'll spend hours in my hammock next to our fire pit.  i use the hammock more in the winter than the rest of the year.

i also spend time with google earth scouting new sailing destinations.

Well the first week is now starting with no boat in the water and no plan to head to the bay, well until CBMWG, nor any Alpaca herding, but my son built us a trebuchet that we used today to launch the many small free pumpkins we were given that make fun sport with a shotgun. The constant booming did bring the county police out to check on things as we were having much fun. After realizing the nature of the sport he joined in for a few shots....wondering about maybe a bow pivot gun for Interlude in case being a retired pirate doesn't work out so well! Now a design of my Jolly Roger is in the works! I remember Heave always flew one...you out there Heave?

....and Brack, know what you mean about the seemingly lack of dress code on boats in cruising the warmer latitudes...ah when we were young and foolish, now jus older and sill foolish!!!

Meanwhile stood in snow this morning at 3,640 feet and then was shooting pumpkins here at almost 70 degrees.....what season is it?

With the new woodshed finished and all this year's and most of next year's firewood in I've been watching some Compac youtube videos. I hadn't realized realized how much boat there is in the Horizon's 20 feet that includes a private head with it's own sink. The total rebuild of the cp16 Kpeting is an intersting one. I especially like the incredibly simple clamp on trailer tongue extension shown.  This may be just what you are looking for Ken J.

Of course if you are curious about how quick and easy it is to reef a junk rig and haven't seen it, check out 'junk rigged compac 19'. But watch out. Luke the young man taking the video came up to see what it was like to sail a junk rigged boat. Two years later he is buying a 34 ft Phil Bolger designed boat that has crossed the Atlantic twice under a hybrid junk rig and will be converting it to basic cambered junk,  His wife not only still speaks to me but is an enthusiastic partner in this. The video of my 19 that he put on youtube has had about 5000 hits and I swear that no more than 2500 of them are mine. Oh yeh, what looks like a fender flopping over the side must be some camera related illusion and not an unseamanlike gaff.

I was asked about finding the Kpeting youtube site in regard to the simple trailer tongue extension shown near the end. The problem locating it may have come from this misspelled way it is listed on youtube. The name of the boat is Kepting. That shows up on the video ( stills) but youtube lists it as Kpeting.

Well post sailing season is shaping up to be just as rainy as sailing season was. Hoping this not the new normal, but regardless it does make for good sitting by a fire reading weather! The daylight hours will be on the rise oh so very soon, spring will be here before ya know it, and we know what that means! Meanwhile what else is everyone doing while we wait? (those of you in warm climates are probably shaking your heads wondering what non-sailing season even is!)

Admiral Vicki and I are heading down to Florida between Christmas and New Years to visit Both Issue families and their offspring.  Then it's back to VA to play Male Nurse St. Tim for 6 weeks as Vicki recuperates from back surgery on the 9th. In the meantime, going sailing on Saturday with winds forecast at 8 mph and 51 sunny degrees.

Well I've already had one December overnight cruise with perfect weather.  I suspect may get some others.  Got all three sons and their families coming home for extended visits over the holidays so twelve in the house for a while.

This winter will be a little different, construction moratorium lifts on January 10th, so I suspect I will be spending a lot of time in Mexico Beach dealing with the reconstruction.  Permitting a camper on the property so we will have a place to stay for what will surely be frequent and extended trips to MB.  Not necessarily why I would normally like to go to FL in the winter, but so be it. Already made three trips to meet with insurance adjusters, engineers, FEMA, and various city officials .  The road back will be a long one.

And when I'm home, adding a 400 square foot addition onto my shop with an open shed section on the side to store my skiff.

Brackish,

Not what anyone would wish to do for their winter vacation in Florida, but it's one of those challenges we face living in paradise. I had two properties in Port Charlotte in preparation of moving here when Charlie swept through on Friday 13th of August 2004. Still working full time and living a thousand miles away, it was a difficult time. I managed to get through it all, the worst part being dealing with insurance company, contractors, and all the other entities involved. I moved here permanently in May of the following year and had more time to put things right. It took about two years to say that things were sort of normal.

On the flip side of that disastrous damage is the fact that our community came back even better than before. Especially where we now live in Punta Gorda, the city was very vigilant about how the poorly built (common 50 years ago) and unsightly structures were replaced, and so the city rebuilt with a fresh new look, and facilities for the residents. The improvement continues today as a result of good local government and a renewed interest of residents to see their neighborhoods a better place to live.

I would expect set backs along the way, but at the same time I think you can look forward to an even better Mexico Beach to rise from the destruction. It will likely become a home that your family will enjoy for generations to come. Even better prepared for nature's occasional reminder of who's the boss.
