Title: Tiller: Original or Ida
Post by: vigsail on March 05, 2007, 01:08:41 PM
Hi all,
I need to replace my original tiller and am trying to decide between one from Com Pac or from Ida.  They seem to be about the same but any information would be appreciated.  I think the price for both is about the same.
Thanks,
Mike

I know the one from Com-Pac does not come varnished, so check with IDA to see if theirs does.  If it does that would be the deciding factor for me.

Chad,
Thanks for the information.  From the pictures on Ida's site it looks varnished.  It certainly is worth a few dollars more if it comes varnished.

I replaced my tiller with the one from Com-pac. It is vertically laminated of ash and , I think teak. I had to trim it a bit to fit the rudder assembly before drilling the bolt holes. I suggest a drill press for this to get perfect alignment. I added my tiller tamer on the bottom and a tiller extension fitting on top. My finish of choice was Armada marine varnish. It is a nice semi-gloss finish which holds up well and does not require sanding between coats. A real guttsy tiller for big hands. I also have installed the Ida rudder and find it improves the helm. It is -1 degree F. with a 20 below wind chill. Can't wait for Spring. Regards all, Steve
