well we have decided to host CLR 2019. this will be the 11th year for the event. last year we didnt have the turnout that we have hoped for but we did have fun nonetheless. our race course would have worked out well if the wind hadn't died a bit of a bummer. the race which was just for fun and photo ops is far from serious competition. for 2019 we have decided to have just a windward-leeward course, with just a start line and a windward mark (simple and easy to layout). skippers will be given a start time determined by the boats handicap rating. the start time (by the clock ) will be assigned giving ample time to get to the line. skippers can start after that time but not before. this helps to keep all boats together at the finish of the race. each skipper will be provided with a map showing the course in relationship to easily visible landmarks. I think our racing marks were pretty visable at 1/3 mile apart. number of laps will be determined by the wind conditions. another activity proposed is the "cruise to the silo". two old concrete silos, left when the river valley was flooded to create the lake, are large visable objects. they are located generally in the middle of the lake. the "cruise" would start at the dam area and continue north to the first silo. sailors would round the silo and proceed north-west to point5 (theres a blue and white sign on the bank with a large number 5. this is a fantastic anchorage and raft up spot with a shallow sand bottom bay. there all sailors would meet for a in the water party. all of the other activities from the past including the meet and greet, awards dinner and cornhole tourney will take place. this is an early posting mainly to give everyone a chance to give us their input. we especially want to hear from previous clr attendees. thanks steve and sarah bender
Steve, our youngest daughter is moving to Montana and getting married out there next September. My 1st vacation choice will naturally be for her wedding, but if any of the CLR dates are available, Joanie and I will be there.
the wedding of your daughter is a premier event in your lives and congratulations from sarah and I. the CLR is a mere footnote, however if you can come the welcome mat will be out.
I don't want to curse myself by saying I'll be there, but dammit! I'm gonna give it my best shot!! Got a few more boats given to me for free since we talked. Cape Dory 10 (rowing only). Flying Scot and a lowly Sunfish! Keeping Koinonia and Straggler. Admiral not happy...and you all are invited to my divorce funeral! BYOPBR!!!
Steve: any dates been firmed up? Love to make CLR but summer fills up fast. Carol and I are celebrating our 50th anniversary on the 19th of June. That is the only date that is in concrete. Best to Sarah.
to bob, bring the flying scott, fast boat easy to trailer and your shot at the clr cup. al, last week of june is the plan. hope both you guys can make it
Thank you for organizing this fantastic event again. We are hoping to come this year but probably without a boat again. There is a possibility I'll be at a conference that week though...we'll see.
Hi Steve. The plan for the Scot was to fix her up a bit and sell. I could use the dough.
Well the last week of june is still open at work so I'll take it and joanie and i will be there. I dont care much for racing, but we'll be at the dock every evening to listen about the heroics of the day.
great news carl. don't fret about the racing cause their will be a cruise to the silo with a raft up in a wonderful cove just west of there. bring a fishing rod as you can wade and fish there. and practice your corn hole skills. don is kick ass great
As of right now I should be there without issue. Ill print this off and see when this job wants me to turn in for time off.
Ill be with me, myself, and I. My friend Brad will be notified and he usually likes to come on for race day, if that happens, look out folks!
Been doing some mocking up on the boat in my spare time, which has involved alot of sitting in the boat in my garage listening to music, maybe some alcohol.......
Looking forward to CLR, and all my boat buddies!
Mac
CLR is on my calendar and being self employed, I'll ask the boss if I can get time off for good behavior. Oh...so I gotta behave good to get the time off?
I'm planning on being there...solo...with Straggler and a sailboat of sorts!
Bob23
I dare you to go out and sit in the boat tonight or tomorrow night
I feel like this is a good time for some input regarding the clr. it seems that not everyone is as keen on racing as I am so if everyone agrees we will cancel the racing and just have THE CRUISE TO THE SILO. we will start at the dam and sail up the lake to and old water tank concrete silo located approximately in the middle of the lake. once you reach the silo head west to point 5 (there's a blue and white sign there). this is a perfect anchorage. sand bottom and shallow enough to just walk about and wade fish if you want. give some feedback
Isn't there time for both?
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the CLR? And where is it?
Sure plan on being at the CLR again this year. Steve and Sarah put on a great week of sailing that anyone in the Midwest should not miss. Hope to see old friends and make some new.
hey marine, the CLR (Carlyle lake rendezvous) is held the last week of june at Carlyle lake (about 30 miles east of st louis. all trailer sailors are welcome no matter who built your boat. check previous posts for details. there are videos on u tube of the 2014 and 2015 events. Bob, there will be time for racing (it will be windward and leeward racing with just two markers). I was just wondering if anyone had real objections to racing. by the way last years race would have worked out great but alas the wind did not cooperate
Looking forward to this epic event!
Being an east coaster (NJ) I find it mildly amusing when your wind doesn't show up. Here, we just have it all the time! Maybe 2 days a year when it's non existent but normally, we just take it for granted. I'll see if I can export some to CLR that week! Ha, it's NJ- there'd probably be a wind tax!!
Bob23
Off the Wind will be there, probably without the Admiral, but with me! Keep the weather cool as I plan on sleeping on the boat. Really looking forward to it Kick. I will also donate copies of both sailing books. Alone in the Gulf and Back to the Gulf. Hello to Sarah. Al
kick,
as stated, i don't care much for racing, but that's me. i tend to be physically active on vacations and have a hard time sitting still or relaxing. (we arrived home from a 5 week vacation last friday and i'm exhausted) sailing is the only thing i do slowly. it's what relaxes me.
however, if racing is what you want, go for it. we'll still be there on the water, we'll just be that small dot w a y at the stern taking pictures of the race boats.
as you suggested, i'll bring my fishing gear, and i'll also bring my bicycle, and snorkeling gear. just to stay active.
i will relax every evening on the dock with a mug purchased specifically for swilling grog. that is MANDATORY!
now h eres a guy who understands the CLR. if we do race it will probably be just a windward and leeward course with the marks just 1/3 mile apart (easy to see that way). it may just be a couple of laps or so. the cruise to the silo is just that. if we have south westerly winds it should be and easy beam reach. a good opportunity to sail in a group and take lots of pics. it should be no problem to keep together. and again it ends with the best anchorage on the lake.
bob, what is strangler and "a sailboat of sorts" ?
I am planning on attending with our Horizon Cat. Don't plan on racing....
race or cruise you will have a great time and meet some great people
Kick:
"Straggler" is the famous guideboat...and I'd like to bring some kind of sailboat out, too. Might be as simple as a Sunfish or could be the Flying Scot unless I sell it first.
I plan on attending this year. No family reunion the last week of June like last year.
I probably shouldn't post this because it may impact my race standing for this year but I'm going to post this anyway. For those of you like Crazy Carl who don't want to race but plan on attending please take note. Twice now at previous CLRs I have taken home two of the largest trophies I have ever won at anything in my life. It wasn't because I finished first either. It was because I was willing to give it a try. I successfully completed the race course and I was rewarded because I participated in the event and most importantly finished in last place.
I'm looking forward to it and I sure hope the lake won't still be frozen over then.
Cheers,
Chris
Second Wind
looks like I better get to work on some trophies. again the racing if you could call it that is just for fun. seems everytime sarah and I go sailing we are either trying to catch or trying to stay ahead of another sailboat. you don't have to be fast to be fun.
where are you from pj?
Have you decided on a theme for thursday's party?
If not, i have a suggestion...how about a beach blanket bingo/frankie and annettet/gidget theme? A clam bake/shrimp boil/bbq?
I can bring the surf music.
It would be the "ginchiest"
sarah was just thinking of sailboats and anchors motif (for the decorations) but I like your idea better. ill give her the word. looks like we might have a good "fleet" this year. if we do night sail (gotta be a full moon) we can just use two or three of the bigger boats. if you have never sailed at night I can assure you it is pretty cool. as I have said no activity is mandatory. what is mandatory is that you all have fun and sarah (especially her) and I will do our best to see that you do. it will be so great to see our clr group again. if any of you have comments or suggestions please share them with us. we want this years clr to be the best one ever. p.s. don't let the "race" idea bother you. its just a bunch of boats sailing around some marks, nothing hardcore (the opposite of any yacht club event to be sure and it does make for some laughs. a special challenge to roger from the Audrey j
I'll be putting a super smooooth bottom on that will be nothing but fast, so be ready. Also I can fill you in on the rest of the story of the trip to the north channel trip last summer.

ROGER
ROGER! You signed the agreement! Beware, if you divulge any of Chris or my "mishaps", we can divulge yours. AND, if you think you didn't have any, wait to hear what i come up with!
Besides, sailors are notorious for telling tales, and you're one hell of a sailor, so your word means diddley.
carl, however you and chris choose to "self identify" if fine by me
looks like we will have a nice mixture in the fleet this year, two or three 19s, three suncats, one or two eclipses, a couple of 16s, a hor izon cat, a hunter 19, two capri 18s, and maybe (hopefully) a flying scot. I know you guys don't want to race but, come on..
where are you from pj?
called the marina today and they're not taking reservations until May, so mark your calendars.
if we reserve early, they'll place us all together.
to save $, i've talked joanie into staying on the boat this year. it shouldn't be too hot in June, and with power dockside, a box fan laid atop the front hatch does a great job of drawing the cool night air through the companionway screen.
for those tht may choose to bring an open boat, there is a camp ground an easy bicycle ride away.
hopefully, mike and Brenda will make it this year. hoping mike (salty) changes his mind and brings island time. ill probably bring the bass boat to set the race marks, I know I always want to race. we could call it cruising in close proximity. im thinking I might do a practice race this spring with matt and rich
I haven't as yet calculated the distance from the dam to the silo. when I do that I can figure start times for each vessel. each captain will be assigned a start time( by the clock). you may start after that time but not before. this should keep the fleet together at the raft up. during the "cruise" those that want to race can do so. those who want to race the course will have a short easy one with markers 1/3 of a mile apart. this should make it much easier for skippers to see them. I haven't decided whether to have a triangular course of just windward and leeward marks. I will try each this spring. sailors will be provided with maps and start times at the Monday meet and greet. hopefully we can race on Tuesday sometime after breakfast. again, and I cant stress this enough, the "race" is just for fun and bragging rights. also a great photo op. those who don't want to race can either sail along with the racers or anchor near the marks cheer us on or shoot us with water canons. we will have a more organized "corn hole" tourney this year with a prize for the winner. im thinking of awarding three trophies this year as well but haven't decided what for exactly (well grounded anchor --for sure). anyway, the event starts on Monday the 24th with the "meet and greet" 7pm and bretz winery. participants can contact me either here, e-mail fordtruck52@yahoo or 317) 292-0258
Did you say water cannons???
I had you in mind bob
Nice. You are sooo thoughtful!
you say you're interested in attending the best get together in the midwest but you don't have boat?
no problem! bring your towing rig, stay for the weeks activities, and leave with a compac 23!

A mark 3- the best!!
Steve, I am an hour south of Louisville Ky (White Mills). Looks like 4 hours or so to the event for me.
PJ
PJ: It's worth it! I drive 14 hours!
pj, you don't have to feel obligated to bring the horizon cat (although I love them) if the sage 15 is easier to tow. we will do our best to make the trip worthwhile. my gosh if you bring the sage no one will have a chance in the race. the best thing about an event like this is the people. they are fantastic
Thanks, Sarah will be with me so the Horizon will work out better for a week onboard. I have listed the Sage for sale this week, so it may not even be an option as I have someone pretty interested already. ;)
im guessing that you sail Kentucky lake. I plan on a week of sailing there in july. glad to hear that you and sarah are coming and to be honest the horizon cat has that sage beat hands down for looks.
Kentucky Lake is awesome, kept both my Island Packet and my Flicka on Kentucky Lake. Just be careful of the coal barges, they are fast and appear often.
planning on sailing with a friend, Matt, who you will meet at the rendezvous. he sails a fast hunter 19 and has been on Kentucky a number of times. only thing I cant understand if why they don't have docks next to the ramps. you would think with all the boats coming there that they would. Carlyle, on the other hand is very easy to launch on.
Green Turtle Bay resort has a temp dock next to ramp. It is on Barkley but you take the nearby canal to KY Lake.
thanks, ill look into it
